Bruin Boys Cruise Past Old Mill, 17-2

Senior Mark Brashears powers the Broadneck attack with six goals in the victory.

Mark Brashears wasn't going to lose to Old Mill, not this year. When Broadneck (5-3) faced off against the visiting Patriots on Wednesday, there was no confusion as to who the better team was. The Bruin boys dominated to the tune of a 17-2 victory.

"Old Mill beat us last year, so we kind of had a little chip on our shoulder playing against them," Brashears said. "So we decided to just come out here and show them this year we're for real."

Brashears netted the games opening three goals, including his second and third tally that finished a mere five seconds apart.

"[I] found an opening and just put it in there," said Brashears, modestly describing his third goal.

The senior attackman scored a game high six goals, as well assisted another goal.

"He's been shooting the lights out of the ball," Broadneck coach Clay White said. "He had a great game today."

Broadneck held its opponent off the scoreboard during the first half, taking a 10-0 lead into the half-time break.

The Bruins nearly kept the Patriots scoreless for three quarters before Old Mill senior Nick Rice put his team on the board with 0:51 remaining.

Rice would score again to open the fourth quarter. Before the Patriot captain could complete the improbable one-man comeback, the Bruins Kevin Malenich made it 15-2, in favor of the hosts.

A patient Bruin attack was helped by eight different players recording goals, as Brashears finished with six, Malenich added three goals, along with Antonio Mazzeo and Brady George each scoring twice.

"We were showing a little bit more patience and making a little better decisions. I'm encouraged with that," White said.

Bruins controlled the game enough that they recorded only two saves on the afternoon. Starting goalie Ryan Jaenke saved one shot, while second-half replacement Tyler Drake saved another.
