Bruins Defeat Severna Park, Move on in Regionals

Broadneck earns a commanding lead early on and Falcons never catch up.

Jumping ahead 14-2 in the first few minutes of the game, Broadneck never lost its lead, defeating Severna Park soundly 79-49 in the second round of the 4A East basketball regional championship yesterday afternoon.

Severna Park had just come off its 38-35 win over Chesapeake before facing Broadneck who was treated to a previous restful bye week.

The Broadneck-Severna Park rivalry was evident before the game even started, with a group of rowdy Broadneck student fans making sure the Falcons knew they weren’t on home turf.

The play was aggressive and physical from the very start, and despite their never coming close to catching up with the Bruins, Severna Park’s players continued to play hard, garnering numerous personal fouls and warnings from referees. In fact, the players of both teams had to be separated multiple times by referees.

The game was interrupted briefly when the power flickered off, leaving players and fans in total darkness for a few seconds. Though the power came back on in the school immediately, it took a while for the gym lights to reach optimal level for play to continue.
