Centrowitz Takes Silver in International Championship Run

Arnold native Matt Centrowitz earned a silver medal in his 1,500 meter run over the weekend at the IAAF World Championship in Moscow.

Matthew Centrowitz, of Arnold, seized a second-place finish on Sunday in the 2013 IAAF World Championship in Moscow.

Centrowitz started the 1,500 meter race in fifth place, and ended in second with a time of 3:36:78—a photo finish between he and Russian runner Johan Cronje's 3:36:83 time, according to online results posted by the IAAF.

Described by enthusiasts of the sport as a master of the tactical side of the 1,500 meter race, Centrowitz and champion Asbel Kiprop of Kenya dueled in a sprint in the final stretch of the race, with positioning being key to victory in the tight lineup. Centrowitz trailed Kenya's other runner, Nixon Chepseba, until the last moments before edging past him and securing a second-place finish.

The silver medal for the Broadneck native is the highest award he's received in the international circuit, after achieving bronze in the 2011 championship, a year after he graduated from college. Centrowitz narrowly missed landing an Olympic bronze medal in the men's 1500 finals during the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
