Coaching the Coaches: A Basketball Clinic

Broadneck Area Youth Sports (BAYS) partners with the Bruins Basketball program to educate youth coaches.

In an effort to prepare area coaches for their upcoming seasons, Broadneck High School has been hosting an annual basketball clinic called 'Coaching the Coaches.'

The clinic, which is organized by Broadneck Area Youth Sports (BAYS), is designed to educate youth coaches that are new to the area and to provide a refresher course for experienced coaches getting ready for the winter sports season.

The clinic highlights different drills and practice techniques that include passing, shooting, rebounding, and general ball-handling skills, and teaches offensive strategies and defensive setups like man-to-man or zone. The coaches can then pass this knowledge on to their players with the help of paper diagrams and technical outlines.

Bruins head coach, John Williams, has been providing his knowledge and experience to area coaches at the clinic for the past six years and enjoys meeting with other high school coaches and recreational-league coaches from all across Broadneck and surrounding areas.

"[The clinic] is as much for me to get to know them," said Williams of his hopes for the clinic's effectiveness. "The consultation going on is probably the most important, whether it's from the recreational coaches or between the supervisors and myself."

When asked about what knowledge he would like the visiting coaches to take away from the clinic, Williams explained that he hopes that they might "gain an idea of what it is we are trying to do at Broadneck; to have a game plan or a map of what we're going to try to do in the future. That's the biggest thing, besides the camaraderie."

Gary Michiche, who has been a part of the BAYS program for 15 years and has been the BAYS Commissioner for the last five years, describes his position as an overseer of the organization and as the "liaison between the county and [BAYS]."

"We appreciate John doing this," said Michiche. "He's done it for a number of years and we really think that it's a good stepping-stone for us and our youth to be able to have the opportunity to play."
