Lady Bruins Roll, Top Arundel, 17-9

Nine different Lady Bruins register goals in a win at Arundel. In boys lacrosse action, Broadneck dropped a tough 8-7 decision.

GAMBRILLS - This season, the success of the Broadneck girls lacrosse team has never been about one individual player, it's always a total team effort. That philosophy held true on Friday, as nine Lady Bruin players recorded goals in 17-9 victory at Arundel High.

"We wanted to make sure we were finishing our shots. We did a good job with that," Broadneck coach Karen Tengwall said.

Four and a half minutes into the game and Broadneck held a 4-0 lead thanks to goals from four different players - Ellie McNulty, Alli Dawson, Kacy Koolage and Aislinn Probst all finished on their shots to boost the Bruins early.

Arundel's Kaitlin Vazina put the Wildcats on the board at the 8:05 mark, but that was the only goal the Broadneck defense would concede in the first half.

The Lady Bruins would rattle off six straight goals in response to the Vazina's tally. Addison Deaton and Logan McCarthy would each tally twice, while Probst and Dawson would add their seconds goals, too. Broadneck took a commanding 10-1 lead into the break.

"We need to put a whole game together, not just half," Vazina said.

A pesky Wildcat attack did not back down from the Lady Bruins, forcing 13 saves from senior goalie Julie Burns. Thirty seconds into the second half, Arundel's Holly Johnson looked set to score from close range, but was stopped by Burns.

"Julie is such a solid keeper," Tengwall said.

The Arundel players continued to attack and even outscored the Lady Bruins in the second half, by 8-7 score.

"Second half play, we didn't play very well," Tengwall said. "Arundel did a great job. They never quit. They never stopped pushing. They drilled our defense."

After Probst scored her third goal, putting Broadneck up 12 with 19:50 to play, Arundel began its improbable comeback effort. The hosts scored five times in the final 5:30 of play, including twice in the last 25 seconds of the second half.

Next up for the Lady Bruins is a make-up date for their game against Old Mill, which will be played on Monday at 5 p.m. at Broadneck.

Broadneck Boys Come Up Short Against Arundel

Sometimes a team does everything it needs to except win. For the Broadneck boys lacrosse team, Friday at Arundel was that kind of game. The Bruins could not overcome the Wildcats speedy attack, as they fell 8-7.

"Pretty much, we did everything but win," senior attackman Mark Brashears said. "Everything was there. We just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net when we needed to."

Broadneck looked poised to take an early lead, but early chances by seniors and Antonio Mazzeo were snuffed out by Arundel's Cameron Gormley. Outside of the opening minutes, the Bruin offense was held in check for the first half.

Down 2-0 at the start of the third quarter, senior Brooks Wiggans fired a shot high into the net past Gormley to give the Bruins their first score. After Arundel responded with a goal, the game had to be delayed an hour and ten minutes due to thunderstorms in the area.

Once play resumed, Arundel's Tyler Young put the Wildcats up 4-1, with a full-field run and score. Senior Colin Rowe then scored and assisted a goal by Brashears in a 31 second stretch to bring Broadneck back within one.

The two teams went off for three goals in a 16 second span near the end of the third quarter, with Hunter Cetrone and Young scoring for the Wildcats and Brashears converting his second of the evening.

"I thought we played hard [and] showed a good comeback," Broadneck coach Clay White said.

The fourth quarter started off much the same way the third quarter finished. After Cameron Cetrone scored 31 seconds into the quarter, sophomore face-off man Zach Franco needed only eight seconds to respond with a goal of his own.

Facing a 8-5 deficit with less than four minutes to play, Mullis brought the Bruins back into game. The gritty senior scooped in a loose ball from close-range and netted again with a 1:17 to play.

With just under a minute to go, Mazzeo nearly equalized but saw a shot clang off the crossbar. The Wildcats would then gain possession and eventually withstand Broadneck's late attempt to tie things up.

"We did everything but tie it up and go to overtime," White said.

The Bruins will now wait for Monday's playoff seeding to determine where they will head next.

"If we see them in the playoffs, it will be a different story," Brashears said.
