Centrowitz Moves to Semis after 5th Place Run

The semifinal race will be Sunday at 3:15 p.m.

Arnold's star track-and-field athlete will move onto the semifinals after he landed fifth place in Friday's preliminary run.

I watched the race live on NBC's iPhone app because NBC wasn't showing track-and-field at the time.

Centrowitz ran in the third heat of Friday's preliminaries. He stayed with the middle of the pack for the majority of the race, as runners bunched together. And like a spring, in the final lap all runners stretched out.

Nixon Kiplimo Chepseba of Kenya was in the lead for a bit, but tripped just behind Centrowitz in the final lap. The Arnold native then poured it on, gaining several spots before crossing the finish line in fifth place.

In the immediate moments after the race, NBC's announcers weren't sure themselves who had placed fifth and sixth place, because it was a close race.

But minutes later, the results became official:

1  Nicholas Willis 3:40.92 2  Abdalaati Iguider 3:41.08 3  Yoann Kowal 3:41.12 4  Henrik Ingebrigtsen 3:41.33 5  Matthew Centrowitz 3:41.39

Centrowitz moves on to the semifinal race on 3:15 p.m. Sunday, the second of three races slotted for the 1,500-meter run.

For more on Centrowitz, check the Broadneck Patch's Local Olympians Guide, or read through his official bio on the USA Track and Field website.
