St. Margaret's Jousting Tournament is Around the Corner

The annual St. Margaret's Episcopal Church jousting tournament is scheduled for July 14.

Young squires will mount their trusty steeds and gallop down lanes to spear iron rings in the annual jousting tournament at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church this month.

The annual event is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 14 at the church.  was a big hit with kids.

Believe it or not, jousting is the official sport of Maryland—you just don't see that reinforced in school sports these days. But with 400 years of tradition to back it up, there's no denying the sport captures young audiences with its heroic feats.

The objective in jousting is to gallop a horse down a track, lance in hand, and deftly guide the end of the lance through small rings with within nine seconds. The track at St. Margaret's is 80 yards long, with three arches suspending various sized rings 6 feet 9 inches from the ground.

The tournament is just one facet of the event. A craft fair, food, performances and other festival activities are planned. Peter Mayer, the current rector of St. Margaret’s said he plans to take a seat on the dunk tank during the event.
