Back-to-School Fundraiser with Pressing Strings

Local band will provide music for education fundraiser at Loews Annapolis Hotel.

Back-to-school is on everyone's mind, and Loews Annapolis Hotel invites the community to join in a fundraiser and silent auction this Friday, Aug. 19 from 6 to 10 p.m. to benefit DonorsChoose.org.

Guests will enjoy live musical entertainment from the band Pressing Strings, whose members include Broadneck native Jordon Sokel.

According to Ellen Gale, spokesperson for the hotel, the event is a “casual and fun way to spend a Friday night, with good music, food, and cocktails."

The partnership with DonorsChoose.org marks the twentieth anniversary of the Loews Hotels Good Neighbor Policy, the hospitality industry’s first comprehensive community outreach program according to Gale.

The program focuses on issues ranging from hunger relief and literacy to green practices and the arts. DonorsChoose.org is a nonprofit website that provides a forum for public school teachers to post their classroom needs and special project requests, such as books, materials or transportation fees for class trips.

James LoBasco, the hotel's general manager, is hopeful that “this back-to-school effort will allow our guests to experience the power of DonorsChoose.org in supporting public education and empowering children.”

Jordon Sokel, a 2004 graduate of Broadneck High School, vocalist and guitarist for Pressing Strings, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, since he and other band members Josh Kachura, Bob Novak and Nick Welker feel that the education system is in "dire need” of programs like this that support classroom teachers.

The band, which was formed in 2006 when Sokel and Kachura met at Salisbury University, features a fusion of roots-rock, soul, blues, hip-hop, and rock and roll for a laid-back, yet funky sound. The group plans to provide the perfect backdrop for a festive evening.

Tickets are required and are $40 per person. For tickets, call Susan DeSousa at 410-295-3257 or email sdesousa@loewshotels.com for information.
