Patch Picks: Local Nonprofits Making a Difference

A quick list of local nonprofits that are busy improving the quality of life for our neighbors every day.

Every Thursday afternoon, Broadneck Patch will provide a list of Patch Picks to highlight local businesses, destinations, services, organizations, ways to spend a day off and more.

This week, Broadneck Patch picks five nonprofits making a difference in our community that are always in need of volunteers. The Broadneck Peninsula is fortunate to have a caring, nurturing community devoted to helping those in need. Here are just a few of the dedicated nonprofits based in our area that provide help and support to those who need it most.

Cat's "R" Us is a feral cat and kitten rescue organization in the Annapolis area (with a shelter in Arnold) that humanely traps, vaccinates, sterilizes, and conducts ear-tips (for identification) by veterinarians. Kittens caught early enough are tamed, vetted, and available for adoption when they are of an appropriate age. Cat's "R" Us participates in adoption shows on Saturdays at Pet Smart in Annapolis. In its 10 years of existence, nearly 10,000 cats have been spayed/neutered and vaccinated at the cost-effective CRU clinics.

3)  My Brother’s Pantry

My Brother's Pantry provides well-balanced, non-perishable food every month to needy families on the Broadneck Peninsula. This effort relies solely on donations and is powered by a large network of dedicated volunteers from seven area churches and a synagogue. Volunteers collect donations, shelve food, pack food boxes and distribute to thankful families.

4)  Arnold Preservation Council

The Arnold Preservation Council works to preserve the rural heritage and healthy environment of the Arnold area by advocating responsible growth, supporting local small businesses, and promoting excellent schools. The group monitors all proposed new growth and development in the area and educates the community about historical facts and proactive advocacy.

5)  Providence Center

The Center provides services to adults with developmental disabilities. In the 1970’s and 80’s, it established a craft program, woodworking and pottery studios, sheltered workshops, and a horticulture program that continues to provide wetland grasses for the restoration of the Chesapeake shoreline. The Center also created a Supported Employment program that supports their clients in competitive employment. Today, over 100 individuals hold diverse jobs in their communities and are employed by businesses throughout the county thanks to the efforts of the Center.
