Broadneck Sailing Team Competing in National Regatta

The sailing team from Broadneck will race against the best high schools in the country in May.

Broadneck High School’s sailing team is heading to a national sailing competition to test their mettle against the best student sailors in the country. Twenty students from BHS will sail in the ISSA High School Doublehanded Championship for the Mallory Trophy in May, where 20 of the best teams in the country come together each year to compete in a fleet sailing championship regatta. David Schoene, a parent volunteer for the team, said getting to the nationals was always a goal in the back of their minds, but getting there was an exciting journey. The team was neck and neck in its penultimate regatta in Christchurch, VA. “It really came down to the last set of races,” Schoene said. “It was a very tight race between the top five schools.” …

AACC Women's LAX Are Conference Champs

AACC's women had a perfect streak of seven wins through the regional tournament, capping their final home game with a 20-7 victory.

In their moment of glory on Thursday night, the women's lacrosse team at Anne Arundel Community College kept things light—gathering around a camera to make goofy faces in the lockerroom. The team had much to celebrate after its 20-7 victory over Howard Community College. The Pioneers swept the Maryland Junior College tournament with a perfect record of seven straight wins. Some of the team's brightest stars include: Meghenn Jackson, who is currently ranked top in goals scored (42), assists (26) and total points (68); Kayla Hertz is second in total points (41); and Shannon O'Neal is fourth in total points (37). BHS LAX Star Natalee Eastom On Her Goaltending Future at Northwestern

Eastom will play for Northwestern University in the fall.

Natalee Eastom was among more than 20 athletes at Broadneck High School to sign college commitment letters on Thursday. Eastom, the goalie for the high school girls' lacrosse team, talked with Patch about her upcoming match against rivals Severna Park High School. Broadneck High's Kristina Dillard Talks Softball Success

Dillard will attend the University of Louisville in the fall.

Kristina Dillard was among more than 20 athletes at Broadneck High School to sign college commitment letters on Thursday. Dillard is the shortstop on the Broadneck High School softball team, which recently won against its rival, Severna Park. She talked with Patch recently about her college plans and a game-winning home run that secured her team's victory over its rivals. Dillard will attend the University of Louisville in the fall. Patch also interviewed Broadneck High School's football team kicker, Adam Greene, about his plans for college in the fall.

Broadneck High's Star Kicker Talks Future with Patch

Greene has been accepted to the University of Maryland, where he will has a walk-on spot in fall 2013 for the football team.

Adam Greene was among more than 20 athletes at Broadneck High School to sign college commitment letters on Thursday. Greene has been accepted to the University of Maryland, where he has a "preferred walk-on" spot for the football team in the fall of 2013. 20 of Broadneck's Top Athletes Sign College Commitments

Student athletes sat down with pens in hand in front of their peers and parents on Thursday afternoon.

Some of the brightest athletic stars in Broadneck all sat in a row on Thursday with their parents and friends to formally sign commitments to colleges in the fall. Posed with their favorite sports equipment along a table long enough to accommodate the 20 athletes, the top talent of the high school swapped stories and shared their hopes for their next big move—to college. Athletics Director Ken Kazmerak said this was a historic occasion. The group of students assembled to sign their commitment letters was the largest he could remember. Last year the school hosted a similar ceremony with four students. AACC Women's LAX Secure Top Seed in Region Tourney

The Lady Pioneers have locked up the top seed for the Region 20 tournament.

The following article was submitted to the Broadneck Patch by Duane Herr, Physical Education and Athletic Assistant at Anne Arundel Community College (AACC). The women’s lacrosse team at Anne Arundel Community College is in position to secure the Maryland Juco conference championship for the 2013 season. With two conference contests remaining, the Pioneers can wrap up the title and lock up the top seed for the Region 20 tournament with a win over Howard Community College Thursday night. AACC women’s lacrosse is 7-2 overall and undefeated in conference play at 5-0. Pioneers Take 6 of 8 Games in Recent Streak

Patch's AACC correspondent covers recent wins by the Pioneers baseball team.

The Anne Arundel Community College baseball team put together a nice string of wins after closing March on a tough spell. The Pioneers have won six of their last eight including a pair of sweeps in doubleheaders against College of Southern Maryland and Stevenson University JV. Dating back to early April, the Pioneers (15-23, 6-12 conference) have won the back end of a doubleheader against Garrett and have dropped just two games since that time. Boston Marathon Explosion: Worst Place, Worst Time

Mike Gimbel, a local runner who has run the marathon eight times, said today's explosions hit the most crowded portion of the course. Click here for video of the explosions.

An explosion Monday at the Boston Marathon came at the worst place at the worst time, according to a Maryland runner who has participated in the prestigious race numerous times. Mike Gimbel, who has run the Boston Marathon eight of the last 10 years, said the area of the explosion near Boylston Street is one of the most populated areas. "The majority of the fans and police are located in that area," said Gimbel. "There's 23,000 runners and everyone is there, some times 100 deep, trying to see their loved ones finishing the race. It's the place to be; it's the highlight of the race." Gimbel was scheduled to run the race again this year but withdrew after a leg injury.
