Broadneck History Book In Its Final Stages

The book, titled Arnold, Maryland and Neighbors on the Broadneck, is set for release by May, the author said.

Where did Arnold get its name? Who were the principal personalities associated with Broadneck's origins? When was Cape St. Claire founded? These questions and more are part of an upcoming history book written by local historian Alberta Stornetta, titled Arnold, Maryland and Neighbors on the Broadneck.  It's the first-ever book on Broadneck, and according to Stornetta, it can't be done soon enough. But after a few setbacks soon to be overcome, she said she's hoping for it to hit the stands by April or May. The book is complete, and the designer is more than halfway done, Storentta said. At a community meeting in Arnold on Monday, Stornetta described the book as a labor of love, saying it should be a fun read for anyone who grew up in the …

Good Samaritans Help Elderly Man After Fall

Two strangers stopped to help an injured man in the area of Chase Creek.

The following was written by Arnold historian Alberta Stornetta, who related a story of two good Samaritans in the Chase Creek area. Stornetta emailed Patch her account of this charitable act. A word of thanks to two unknown good samaritans who stopped their cars to render aid to our 93-year-old neighbor who had fallen in the street. I happened to look out my window and saw the commotion. I went out to investigate. A man and a woman were helping our elderly neighbor, who had fallen to the pavement on Circle Drive, back to his nearby house. He was shaken and bleeding from a bump on the head and various scratches on his hands. These still unknown people helped calm him down and clean him up, while I went for a nurse next door and called a …

Broadneck Patch's 2012 Year In Review (Part 2)

In 2012: A local mom pioneered a playground renaissance, work on a new walking trail began, and the local community college opened its renovated library.

Part two of the Broadneck Patch's year in review for 2012 saw some of the lighter news of this year's top stories. Did you miss Part 1 of the year in review? Persistence paid off for one Broadneck mom, who started a fundraising campaign to help rebuild Broadneck Park's playground. In July, it was confirmed that Anne Arundel County would fund $35,000 in restoration efforts at the playground. It was a huge step forward for the Friends of Broadneck Park. In total, the Friends of Broadneck Park raised $50,000 this year for new playground equipment, not only to ensure it was safe, but also to expand the available equipment to younger children.   Kara McGuirk-Allison, a mother from Broadneck, headed the effort under the umbrella of Broadneck …

Book on Broadneck's History Due in February

Stornetta's work began with focusing only on Arnold, but after hearing the stories of other communities, she broadened the scope of her work to the entire Broadneck peninsula.

Arnold, Maryland and Neighbors on the Broadneck, a history book capturing the story of the various communities of the Broadneck peninsula, is set to be published in February. The book is written by Arnold historian Alberta Stornetta, who has spent the past seven years gathering pieces of history together order to create the first definitive book on the area. Some excerpts from the book have been published online, including a section telling the story of how Arnold got its name. Stornetta's work began with focusing only on Arnold, but after hearing the stories of other communities, she broadened the scope of her work to the entire Broadneck peninsula, including Cape St. Claire. In an interview with Patch in January, Stornetta said the book …

Where Did Arnold Get Its Name?

An area historian is answering that question along with many others in a new book.

Arnold is a place everyone on the Broadneck peninsula frequents, whether we're simply passing through, or visiting local shops. But did you ever ask yourself where the name "Arnold" came from? Broadneck historian Alberta Stornetta is chronicling the area's rich story in a book titled Arnold, MD and Neighbors on the Broadneck, and is aiming for a release by the end of the year. Stornetta has said it is going to be the book that "puts Arnold on the map," but it also will contain the histories of the Providence and Cape St. Claire areas of the peninsula. A sampling of the book's opening sections is available for review on the Arnold Preservation Council's website. The first section of the book deals with the origin behind Arnold's naming. The…

Resident Writes First-Ever History Book of Arnold

A local author has set a date for later this year to publish her collection of Arnold's history.

Before the year is over, Arnold will get its first history book. Alberta Stornetta, a longtime resident of Broadneck, has been diligently gathering pieces of history together for seven years in order to formulate the first definitive book on Arnold. “This is going to be the year of the book,” Stornetta said. “We plan to put Arnold on the map.” The tentative title of the book is Arnold, Maryland: The Little Post Office that Grew. However, Stornetta has said the title may change to encompass all of Broadneck, depending on how much material she can assemble. Stornetta began work on the book seven years ago after being asked by Asbury Church to put together its history. “One of our parishioners told people I was an expert on Arnold history. …
