More than 2,000 graduates received degrees and certificates at the 51st graduation at Anne Arundel Community College's Arnold campus. The keynote speaker was Lieutenant Gov. Anthony Brown, who recounted stories of his childhood and gave advice to those who would graduate: travel, don't be afraid to fail, and life is short, so live well. Anne Arundel Community College's 51st commencement will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, with gubernatorial candidate Anthony Brown as the keynote speaker. This year's valedictorian is Michelle DeSanctis, 30, of Bowie, who is graduating with an associate of arts degree in transfer studies. She will attend the University of Maryland in College Park in the fall, where she plans to be a teacher. The presidential scholar is William Patrick Moynihan, 25, of Arnold. The scholar is the student with the highest grade-point-average who earned his degree within a two-year period. The community college's womens lacrosse and softball teams both finished their seasons with national tournaments.

Anne Arundel Community College wraps up spring sports as women’s lacrosse and softball complete their seasons with national championship runs. The women’s lacrosse team at AACC competed in the NJCAA National Championship last week in Rochester, NY, entering the tournament as the No. 2 seed. In the semi-finals the Pioneers matched up against Onondaga CC, which held the slight advantage on paper after defeating AACC back in March. Anne Arundel Community College student Brad Absher first thought he might like to be a teacher when his child development class turned the classroom into a solar system. Absher liked the creativity used to teach a lesson and the experience ultimately led to his decision to pursue a career as a teacher. Two of Anne Arundel Community College’s women’s teams returned from their respective Region XX Tournaments with championship plaques and births to NJCAA National Tournaments. The top seeded Pioneer women’s lacrosse team captured their third consecutive region title with a 19-9 victory over Harford Community College. AACC advanced to the championship contest with a 20-10 victory over tournament host CCBC – Essex in the semi-finals. Executive Laura Neuman will speak at the Arnold campus on May 22.
Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman is scheduled to speak at Anne Arundel Community College in a joint event hosted by several local citizens groups. Local residents are invited to attend a speech by Neuman at AACC on May 22 in Arnold where the executive will lay out her priorities for the next fiscal year. Neuman will also host a question and answer session after her presentation. Anne Arundel Community College’s men’s lacrosse team played their final game of the 2013 season Friday in the opening round of the Region 20 tournament. A loss to Harford Community College put a halt to the Pioneers post-season hopes. The Pioneers put together a three-game winning streak prior to the tournament including an impressive upset over sixth-ranked Suffolk Community College. A workshop before the fair will orient job-seekers with the best ways to approach potential employers.
More than 70 employers will be seeking workers at the Spring Job Fair at Anne Arundel Community College on Tuesday. The annual job fair regularly brings hundreds of interested workers seeking employment or new career opportunities. Veronica Boreland, employment services specialist at AACC, said job seekers should bring resumes, dress in business attire to make a good impression and be prepared to talk to employers about what they could bring to specific job openings that the employers are offering. A local nonprofit promotes sexual assault awareness and support for victims in a charity walk.
A solidarity walk that seeks to raise awareness of sexual assault victims will take place Saturday around the track at Anne Arundel Community College. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the third-annual Walk a Mile in Her Heels event this weekend encourages its participants to wear their flashiest shoes as they walk a mile around the track to "show solidarity with victims of sexual assault," according to a press release.
