The national debate bowl was swept by a team of four from AACC.
The Anne Arundel Community College Ethics Team took first place in the 11th Annual Community College Ethics Bowl. Cleanly navigating around such touchy subjects as, whether failing to attribute sources is always plagiarism, whether rape jokes are ever ethical, and whether mothers and fathers should be entitled to paid maternity/paternity leave, the AACC team swept the competition, according to a press release. Representing the Anne Arundel team were: The team was coached by Kevin Murphy, an assistant professor in the Philosophy department. “I am very proud of all your enthusiasm, hard work and especially courage for taking on tough intellectual challenges,” Murphy told the team after the competition. The Lady Pioneers have locked up the top seed for the Region 20 tournament.

The women’s lacrosse team at Anne Arundel Community College is in position to secure the Maryland Juco conference championship for the 2013 season. With two conference contests remaining, the Pioneers can wrap up the title and lock up the top seed for the Region 20 tournament with a win over Howard Community College Thursday night. AACC women’s lacrosse is 7-2 overall and undefeated in conference play at 5-0. The Pioneers' latest victory was a 16-5 toppling of CCBC Catonsville on Wednesday, April 10. The Anne Arundel Community College baseball team put together a nice string of wins after closing March on a tough spell. The Pioneers have won six of their last eight including a pair of sweeps in doubleheaders against College of Southern Maryland and Stevenson University JV. Dating back to early April, the Pioneers (15-23, 6-12 conference) have won the back end of a doubleheader against Garrett and have dropped just two games since that time. A 12-member team from Anne Arundel is continuing its rise to fame in the world of cyber forensics.
Anne Arundel Community College's cyber forensics team beat out 20 other teams in a national competition that tested computer infiltration abilities. The 12-member team composed of AACC students includes: The team earned a regional placement in the 2013 National CyberWatch Center Mid-Atlantic Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC) Finals, according to a press release from the community college. AACC's team along with seven others will compete this weekend in Laurel in the next round of the competition. The community college's team has regularly placed highly in the national competition. The community college's astronomy club will host a lecture from a NASA scientist on Saturday.
Learn about the latest findings from the Mars Science Laboratory's Curiosity rover when a scientist with the National Air and Space Administration (NASA) speaks at Anne Arundel Community College's astronomy club, scheduled for Saturday. The special guest that evening will be Kelly Fast, Ph.D., a planetary scientist at the Goddard Space Flight Center, currently serving with NASA. Her talk is one of the Planet Walk events on Saturday that are co-sponsored by the AACC Astronomy Club, the Friends of Anne Arundel Trails Inc. and the NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center. The men and women's lacrosse teams scored wins across the region over the past week.

Anne Arundel Community College’s men’s lacrosse team is currently 4-3 and ranked 10th in the nation after winning three of their last five games. The three victories were over Northern Virginia CC (18-3 final), Brookdale CC (17-10 final) and Delaware Technical and CC Terry (18-10 final). The two losses were close contests to a strong Naval Academy Prep team (6-9 final) and Stevenson University’s JV team (10-11 final). A panel of six judges will be at AACC on Wednesday to discuss modern privacy concerns.
A seminar at Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) on Wednesday will involve a panel of judges speaking on looming privacy concerns. Judges from each level of the Maryland courts and a federal judge will meet to discuss: “The 4th Amendment: The Government Can Do What without a Warrant?” The discussion will focus on privacy issues involving strip searches, blood testing and DNA collection, according to an announcement. A total of 52 teams competed in the second-annual Anne Arundel Community College Truck Pull on Thursday—more than doubling last year's participation of 20 teams. The teams hauled a FedEx truck over a finish line using a rope and brute strength, competing for speed, and in one case, style. The winner of the event was a student team calling themselves, well, The Winners. The team pulled in a time of 10.97 seconds, besting the second-place team, Thrown2Gether, by a tenth of a second. The slowest team was Hell on Heels, who despite their 22-second finish, pulled with style and grace while wearing heels.
