Arnold Elementary Parents, Students Say New School Long Overdue

The school was built in 1967, and since then has not received any major overhauls.

A group of parents with students at Arnold Elementary School have attended the past two county budget hearings asking for planning funding, which could lead to the construction of a replacement school. The group addressed the Anne Arundel County Council twice during public hearings on the county budget this month, asking for approval of a $2.23 million feasibility study at the school—the first step in any construction project at the school system. The study would help to determine the scale of construction that needs to be done at the school, whether it should be replaced or merely patched. Arnold Elementary was built in 1967, and since then has not received any major overhauls. The school is listed on the school system's six-year capital …

We are asking council members to look outside the List and evaluate schools on our current condition. If the "list" was being followed all this work would have been completed by now, that is per the official MGT study.   more ›

A Note from Councilman Dick Ladd

In his latest column, Broadneck and Severna Park's County Councilman Dick Ladd discusses the future of the Baltimore & Annapolis Trail.

The following is from the May edition of a monthly column written by Anne Arundel County Councilman Dick Ladd (R-5th District), a resident of the Broadneck peninsula. It is fair to say that the B&A Trail offers one of the best outdoor recreational opportunities in Anne Arundel County.  Whether you ride a bicycle, jog, or walk, this 13.3-mile multi-use asphalt linear trail park also serves as a transportation corridor linking citizens to work and businesses.  It should come as no surprise that the trail can be a busy place.  At many spots on the trail, it can host over 700 users during a 2-hour time period, as it did on three consecutive Saturdays this past September. The B&A Trail is reaching its 23rd year of existence.  Although it has …

A Note from Councilman Dick Ladd

In his monthly newsletter post, Broadneck and Severna Park's County Councilman Dick Ladd discusses issues of importance to the community.

The following is from the April edition of a monthly column written by Anne Arundel County Councilman Dick Ladd (R-5th District), a resident of the Broadneck peninsula. Our new County Executive Laura Neuman is openly and refreshingly reaching out to all interests in the County.  She joined us for the 2013 ASPIRE awards dinner; she will speak to the Greater Severna Park Council soon; she will visit Kinder Park later in the spring; and she attended SPHS’s “Rock n Roll Revival XXIV” with her children.  The latter really displayed the Park’s sense of excellence, community, achievement, and school and family.  I encourage everyone to provide Ms. Neuman the opportunity to get to know you and your organization better.  I will gladly assist in any…

Ladd Discusses Impact of Critical Area, Stormwater Bills

In his latest column, Broadneck and Severna Park's councilman reviews two large bills that will have an impact on the environment.

The following is from the March edition of a monthly column written by Anne Arundel County Councilman Dick Ladd (R-5th District), a resident of the Broadneck peninsula. The Council has acted on a number of substantive items in the last several weeks.  Most important has been the selection and appointment of Laura Neuman as the new County Executive. I am delighted that Ms. Neuman was selected by the Council.  I personally wish her the very best, and I am positive her remarkable record of successes will soon include that of County Executive.  She is now in the process of forming her executive team and preparing the County’s FY2014 budget.  There were 16 residents who came forward and offered their services.  It is indeed a high compliment to…

County Executive Neuman Takes Oath of Office

Laura Neuman said she will make Anne Arundel County a leader in Maryland.

Anne Arundel's new county executive, Laura Neuman, was sworn into office on Friday morning at the county courthouse in the company of her family. Neuman recited the words that formalized her office, while standing next to her daughter, Avery, and son, Alex—who both beamed and waved for the cameras. After the ceremony, Neuman laid out a portion of her plans as executive. "We will be a leader in the state, and I look forward to meeting that effort. We will restore confidence in the executive branch of government in Anne Arundel County," she said. "I am truly honored to have this opportunity. Thank you." Neuman assumed the office of county executive almost exactly 12 hours after Thursday night's County Council meeting, where she received the …
