Arnold Elementary Parents, Students Say New School Long Overdue

The school was built in 1967, and since then has not received any major overhauls.

A group of parents with students at Arnold Elementary School have attended the past two county budget hearings asking for planning funding, which could lead to the construction of a replacement school. The group addressed the Anne Arundel County Council twice during public hearings on the county budget this month, asking for approval of a $2.23 million feasibility study at the school—the first step in any construction project at the school system. The study would help to determine the scale of construction that needs to be done at the school, whether it should be replaced or merely patched. Arnold Elementary was built in 1967, and since then has not received any major overhauls. The school is listed on the school system's six-year capital …

We are asking council members to look outside the List and evaluate schools on our current condition. If the "list" was being followed all this work would have been completed by now, that is per the official MGT study.   more ›

Olivia Constants Foundation Gives $860 to Stop Bullying at Schools

A foundation formed after the death of a local teen is giving back to the community.

A nonprofit formed after the death of a Broadneck High School freshman has recently awarded funds to two local schools to help stop bullying. The Olivia Constants Foundation was established in memory of Olivia Constants, who died in June 2011 after a sailing accident on the Severn River. The charity formed in her name is operated by family members and friends, including her sister Chloe Constants.  "Our mission is to do everything we can, for whomever we can, in the spirit of Olivia," Chloe Constants said in the foundation's promotional video. In February, the foundation awarded $500 in grants to Severn River Middle School and $360 to Arnold Elementary School to support bullying prevention. The first foundation fundraiser is scheduled for …

Arnold Elementary Students Place in Top 10 of Black Saga

The teams prepared for the competition with some help from the school's media teacher, who lent books to make more meaningful connections to the information they learned.

Arnold Elementary School fourth- and fifth-graders placed ninth overall in the state Black Saga Competition and were acknowledged as the longest-running school to compete. The statewide academic competition over African-American history was held Saturday at Towson University. Middle schools from across the state sent 48 teams of students to the competition. Fourth-graders Colin Bright, Rachel Kinsey, and Scott Frazee; and fifth-graders Maddy Wilson, Kendall Callow, and Samantha Dupcak composed the two teams sent to the Black Saga Competition from AES.  "The students love this competition due to the topic of black history and also in the name of friendly competition," said AES team coordinator Dana Smith. "They aim to win of course, but …

School Board Requests $1.01B Budget from County

One school board member cast a dissenting vote, saying she could not recommend a budget amount that would ultimately be rejected by the Anne Arundel County Council.

Improvements at Arnold Elementary could be in the pipeline thanks to the newest schools budget. The Anne Arundel County Board of Education on Wednesday adopted a $1.01 billion school system budget for fiscal year 2014, but not before members held a discussion about why they were requesting 3.2 percent more in funding this year. The operating budget, passed by a vote of 8-1, will now be sent to Anne Arundel County Government, who must then prepare a budget package for a final vote by the funding body, the Anne Arundel County Council. The council is scheduled to receive its budget proposal by May, and vote on it by June 30. Anne Arundel County school board member Amalie Brandenburg was the lone dissenter in the 2014 operations budget vote. …

We can always vote out the county council members and county executive who do not learn how to play nicely with others. We do not have that ability with the board members or the superintendent of schools. Board members are appointed by our governor and they hire the superintendent. It's always a power struggle for the money.   more ›

VIDEO: Severn River Orchestra Tours Broadneck Schools

The tour showed elementary students the kind of music program they'll have access to in middle school.

Arnold Elementary's gymnasium boomed with brass and strings on Friday morning to the tunes of Katy Perry's "Fireworks." Severn River Middle School's chamber orchestra was on tour Friday across several Broadneck schools, starting with Arnold Elementary, and then on to Belvedere Elementary and Windsor Farm Elementary. Music director Mike Tayman told 5th grade students about the orchestra's trips this year across the county—from FutureCare to play for senior citizens, and to the Marley Station Mall to play for an even larger audience. They'll also be taking a trip to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg in the future. Tayman encouraged younger musicians to keep at it, as it only gets better. "What you find in music is that if you keep playing, …

Arnold Elementary Study Included in Capital Budget

A local school would get money for a feasibility study under the capital budget proposed in December.

Next week, the Anne Arundel County Board of Education will hold two public hearings to discuss the proposed operating and capital budgets for fiscal year 2014.  The proposal from Superintendent Kevin Maxwell calls for more than $1 billion in operating expenses and a capital budget of about $240 million.  The capital budget includes requests to fund expansion and renovation projects at many schools, including $2.23 million for a feasibility study at Arnold Elementary School.  That study would look at five options for construction at the school, which was first built in 1967. Those options are:  Once the study is complete, Maxwell and his staff will recommend a course of action in a future budget year, and the board will make the final …

Police Call School Shooting Threats Unfounded

Arnold Elementary students underwent a drill Tuesday training for the event of an armed intruder.

Police said at a press conference on Wednesday that rumors spreading on social media of planned school shootings on Friday have all been investigated and found to be not credible. Arnold Elementary students underwent a drill on Tuesday training for the event of an armed intruder. School officials at Wednesday's press conference said that was a regularly scheduled drill, and its timing was merely coincidental to the Connecticut school shooting. Lt. J.D. Batten, who is charge of school security for Anne Arundel County, said some shooting rumors have come from students saying they heard it from others. The press conference was held Wednesday morning at the central office of Anne Arundel County Public Schools to address the rumors that are …

Arnold Elementary Practices Armed Intruder Drill

The school will practice a lock-down drill to prepare against an armed intruder.

Arnold Elementary School students will be practicing a drill Tuesday afternoon designed to prepare them and faculty in the case of an armed intruder entering the building. Principal Shauna Kauffman sent a letter home to parents on Monday, saying the drill was planned before Friday's school shooting incident in Connecticut. She also assured parents that the drill would not be dramatized. "I want to assure you that no one will be simulating the role of the intruder and we will not announce it as an intruder," Kauffman said. Students will be given directions to practice a lock-down drill and to go to the safe area in their classroom. Kauffman said she sent the letter home to parents in case they wanted to discuss the events in Connecticut …
