New Hair Color Studio Takes Root In Bay Hills

The studio offers all types of hair services including cutting and styling, but specializes in hair coloring.

Looking for the perfect color for you? There's a new stylist in town. AE Hair Color Studio opened this week in the Bay Hills Shopping Center. Ann Ellis, the owner of the studio, said she has been a hair colorist in the Annapolis area for nine years. A resident of Arnold, she saw an opportunity to provide her services locally, and jumped at the chance. "I feel like our community, and the Bay Hills Shopping Center enter in particular, needed a boutique-type hair salon with a personal, customized feel," Ellis said. The studio offers all types of hair services, including cutting and styling, but specializes in hair coloring, Ellis said. For more information, visit the studio's website, its Facebook page, or stop by the studio, located at the …

Hallmark Store Owner Saw 'the End Coming' Before Closing

The card and gift store is set to close at the end of the month.

After more than 25 years, the Bay Hills Card and Gift Hallmark store in Arnold will close its doors at the end of February. It's the end of an era for store owner Brad McCormack, who has been working at the business since the 1980s, inheriting it from his father, Fred, who had worked for Hallmark since after Vietnam. The Arnold store officially opened in November 1987, doing much of its business selling holiday and birthday cards, with a thriving gift and candy market on the side. But times have changed. McCormack said he was closing the Arnold store because it was no longer financially viable. Part of that is due to an online shift in the retail market that several businesses are experiencing, but another factor is the local market, he …

Shop Pink in Broadneck to Benefit Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which means a variety of pink products will be hitting the shelves. But, do your pink purchases always go towards the cause?

A wave of pink is flooding stores everywhere, as retailers participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For the savvy shopper, it's an opportunity to donate to a good cause while snagging unique, pink-hued items. Around Broadneck, there are a number of small shops that are currently selling pink-colored items to support Breast Cancer Awareness. Over at Della & Jane, a clothing and gift shop for women and kids, you can purchase a pink ribbon keychain with proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. At Bay Hills Card and Gifts, there are ornaments and cards on sale which also help support breast cancer research. Before you plunk down your green for some pink, the nonprofits behind Breast Cancer Awareness Month want you to check…

Bay Hills Businesses Get Power Back, Assess Damage

The center has not had electricity since Saturday.

Power was restored today to Bay Hills Shopping Center, however the financial trauma continues as storeowners try to get their businesses back on track following Hurricane Irene and its aftermath. The center has not had electricity since Saturday. “We lost everything,” said Kevin Malone of Bay Hills Deli about his meats and cheeses and sandwich fixings. By late morning he was trying to assess any damage to his deli counter and refrigeration needs. In between, a few employees of other stores were stopping by to buy some chips and sodas and dismayed that there wasn’t even coffee. Every storefront in the center lost several days of business this week. This morning, stores were slowly re-opening and hoping that the customers would follow. Bay …

Bay Hills' Superfresh Closes

The closing of the Superfresh store in Bay Hills caught some off guard. Mrs. Green's expected to open at the site but no timetable yet.

Denise Holland, of Mago Vista, walked into Superfresh in Arnold on Wednesday to pick up a few items only to discover bare shelves and store closing signs posted all around. “I didn’t even know the store was closing,” Holland said. “I don’t always shop here, but it is the quickest and most convenient place to come and pick up something when I need it. It would definitely impact me if there weren’t a (grocery) store here. I think we need a grocery store in this location.” A few customers could be found scouring what remained on the shelves, much of which was discounted between 20 percent and 80 percent. The salad bar, fresh meats and other produce were gone. The milk “sell by” date on the remaining gallons will outlive the store itself. At 6…

I don't know, I'm still a little skeptical. While I agree the old SuperFresh was not a friendly inviting store, I just can't seem to get excited about the idea of an organic market moving in. I had been told that it was being converted to a Shop Rite, and was pretty happy to hear that, but now.........I'll try to keep an open mind, but I don't know how successful this model will be in this …   more ›

Broadneck Summer Swim Report

With three out of five regular season meets done, there are already some standouts in the Broadneck area.

Greater Annapolis Swim League teams are headed into the July 4th break with swimmers already performing like champs and with one eye towards the end of season medal meets. The league has completed three of its five regular season meets; strokes have improved and records smashed. Five Broadneck area teams compete in the 20-team league including Indian Hills Swim Club as well as Ulmstead, Bay Hills, Cape St. Claire and Harting Farm swim teams. The tightest meet to date was on Saturday when Indian Hills Swim Club squeaked past Bay Ridge Swim Team 227-226.  “It was very exciting,” said Indian Hills’ head coach Sandy Avery. “We have had close meets before, but this felt tight from the start. In points it came down to the final relay, but every …

Superfresh to Eliminate About 1,500 Jobs In Maryland

The grocer's parent company plans to close 22 stores in the state, including its Bay Hills location. It is currently auctioning off assets.

The Superfresh grocery chain Monday notified state officials that it intends to eliminate about 1,500 jobs in Maryland, with job terminations to begin as early as July 9. Michael Raia, a spokesman for the state Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, said the agency had received notification from Superfresh for precisely 1,477 terminations at 22 separate stores across the state. The Superfresh store at in the Bay Hills shopping center is among the stores expected to close.  Under state law, employers are required to notify state officials when they are planning mass firings, he said. So-called WARN notices are also required to be sent directly to the employees affected, Raia said. George Murphy Jr., president of United Food & …

Last Week's Broadneck Patch Pick Winner!

Local restaurant wins the honor of being the community's first Broadneck Patch Pick.

It's official. The votes are in and counted and, by a close margin, it looks like George's Restaurant and Carryout in Bay Hills is the official winner of the Broadneck Best Patch Pick for Pizza. The restaurant has been at the Bay Hills location for 28 years and is still going strong. A grateful George Alevrofas (yes THAT George) wanted to be sure we shared his thanks to the voters who appreciate his New York style of pizza making. "The restaurant business is hard, I spend many hours here," said Alevrofas. "It's good to know that people like what we do."

Broadneck's Best Patch Pick - Coffee

Who will you pick for best pick-me-up?

During the morning routine, there's no time for nonsense. Get the kids to school, get to work, get the dog fed and get the coffee that gets us through it all. Here in Broadneck, residents are fortunate to have some excellent choices when it comes to their caffeinated fuel, whether it's part of a morning rush or part of a relaxing time-out from daily chores. Naval Bagels has been a fixture in the Arnold Station Shopping Center since August of 2009. Like the name suggests, owners and employees are huge Navy fans who never hesitate to root for the home team. Even though Naval Bagels has a selection of espresso beverages and other fancy coffee drink items, manager Ronnie Woo believes there's something to be said for the basics. "Our regular …
