Phase 1 also includes an entrance to the trail from the parking lot of the Broadneck Library.
Construction crews are working hard in cold weather to finish up the first phase of the Broadneck Peninsula Trail, which will stretch from Green Holly Drive to Old Cape St. Claire Road. The ultimate goal of the trail is to create a path for walkers and bikers in Broadneck that connects from Cape St. Claire all the way to the Baltimore and Annapolis Trail. Anne Arundel County Government spokesman Dave Abrams said Friday that the trail's first phase should be completed by January. Abrams also said that residents shouldn't worry about the vegetation that has been displaced during the construction work. "There will be significant replanting, so people can rest assured that once the trail is complete, it will look much better," Abrams said. "…

The first phase of the trail's construction should be completed by early 2013.
County officials formally plunged golden shovels into the dirt at the site of a new, 6.6-mile trail in Broadneck on Thursday. The crowd gathered for The Broadneck Peninsula Trail's groundbreaking ceremony was a shortlist for local parks and trails enthusiasts. Members of the Arnold Preservation Council, Broadneck Council of Communities and the Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails all wore smiles, despite the heat. The trail will span the peninsula from west to east, linking Sandy Point State Park to the Baltimore and Annapolis Trail in Arnold. Phase 1 of the project includes the construction of a trail along College Parkway from Green Holly Drive to Cape St. Claire Road and the Walnut Ridge community (see attached .PDF). Phases of the …

Panelists pitch wild ideas to resolve congestion on Route 50.
Experts in the field of transportation planning put their heads together on Tuesday in Broadneck to find solutions to looming problems. In 2009, when county planners assembled their long-range vision of the county up to year 2035, they left one piece out—transportation. That aspect of the plan has been worked on throughout these past three years, and is set to be finalized soon. A key component of the plan will come from a citizens group established by County Executive John R. Leopold to gather input from around the county on what should be included. The public meeting held Tuesday at St. Margaret’s Parish Hall was organized by the Broadneck Council of Communities (BCC) on the eve of the citizens group’s final meeting, when the public …

A community meeting will be held Tuesday to air comments on transportation in Broadneck.
County planners and Broadneck leaders will join forces on Tuesday for a meeting about the future of transportation on the peninsula. The meeting is being hosted by the Broadneck Council of Communities, led by President Patricia Lynch and Bill Nevel. The purpose of the meeting is to gather public comment on county transportation issues that face the Broadneck area. The meeting represents the final community input toward the county's transportation master plan before the final draft of the Transportation Functional Master Plan (TFMP) is released. The meeting will focus on the Route 50 corridor and major intersecting roads from Interstate 97 to the Bay Bridge, according to a release. Notable personalities that are scheduled to attend are …

Help gather images that represent Arnold by snapping a photo of what you think represents the town.
This is the first in a series covering Arnold's identity crisis. "Close your eyes. Think about Arnold in your head. What images come to mind?" This is a question I've asked several people the past few weeks as I gather information for a series of stories on Arnold's identity. For some, the answer to the question is the people they know here. For others, it's their home. But for many, it's difficult to pick out one landmark or solid visual that captures the area. Some say Arnold is facing an identity crisis. Arnold historian Alberta Stornetta says: "It's not a town. It's a ZIP code." Throughout this week, I'll be featuring stories that tackle the issue. To supplement that, I'm asking readers to post the pictures they think of when they …

Two area citizens' groups met to discuss the future of the Broadneck peninsula.
Broadneck officials aren't happy with a new legislative redistricting map, but it's unlikely a change can be made. The two citizens' groups that oversee planning and growth in Broadneck met last week at a joint meeting to look into the past year, and ahead into what's coming in 2012. The Arnold Preservation Council and the Broadneck Council of Communities were joined on Thursday by County Councilman Dick Ladd and Bill Nevel, a member of the county’s transportation master plan committee. With these two officials in attendance, the meeting was a chance for the citizens to let officials know the issues they’re concerned the most about. Those key issues included: Redistricting In December, Gov. Martin O'Malley unveiled a new state …

Bakery at Brown's Woods and St. Margaret's Road could be affected if rezoning request is approved.
The Broadneck Council of Communities held its recent meeting last week, with the top agenda item focused on the current 49 rezoning applications before the County Office of Planning and Zoning. During this meeting, the BCC and community leaders and members from the Brown’s Woods and St. Margaret's neighborhoods discussed strategy for presenting opposition to the requested rezoning application for a commercial C-1 status from the R-1 current status of the building housing the Cakes and Confections Gourmet Bakery currently rented from the owner at the junction of St. Margaret’s Road and Brown’s Woods Road. The owner of the property, who lives outside the country, wants to have the property rezoned for commercial use. There was discussion …

The agency’s proposed toll increases will be discussed and public testimony is welcome.
Residents of the Broadneck area will have the opportunity to provide input on the recent proposal by the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) to significantly raise tolls on state bridges and tunnels. Nine public hearings will be held by the MDTA Board to receive public and private testimony for the proposed toll increases, including tonight’s meeting at Severn River Middle School. The hearings will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with sign-in and displays from 5:30 to 6 p.m. and the formal presentation testimony beginning at 6 p.m. Registration for public comment will close at 7:45 p.m. Under the proposal, tolls for passenger cars on the Bay Bridge would, beginning Oct. 1, increase from $2.50 to $5 and eventually would increase to $8 on …

Groups focus on comprehensive rezoning for District 5 coming soon for the County Council.
Attendees at the June 13th town meeting at the Cape St. Claire Clubhouse were given a map of the Broadneck peninsula with 49 little red stars on it. Each of those stars represents a property where the owner has requested a zoning change. Some of the proposed changes are dramatic. If the application survives the county’s once-a-decade Comprehensive Rezoning Process, where one house sits today, five could sprout up in the future. Or a property that’s zoned residential today could become a shopping center tomorrow, if the zoning is changed to allow commercial development. It’s all in the numbers: R1 to R5; R2 to C3 and so on. With rezoning in the northwestern and western areas of the county now finished, county planners and elected officials …
