Broadneck Shows Camaraderie With Rival Team

The front of the shirts reads: “Always Remember Tracy #15,” and the back reads, “One County, One Rival, One Heart.”

Broadneck High School lacrosse players wore shirts with the message, “One County, One Rival, One Heart," in the wake of the death of a Severna Park High School student. Broadneck High School’s girls lacrosse team showed up at a Severna Park High School lacrosse game on Thursday wearing T-shirts bearing a message of support for Tracy Vander Kolk, 16, a SPHS student and lacrosse player, who died earlier in May. The idea for the T-shirts came from Broadneck High School (BHS) lacrosse player Blair Bernhardt, who played with Vander Kolk when she was younger. Bernhardt said her idea spread among the team, and within two days, they  had the shirts made. BHS lacrosse team captain Anna Haley said Bernhardt’s idea struck a chord with the team, and …

Lady Bruins Drop Regional Final To Severna Park, 9-4

Severna Park pulls away from Broadneck in the second half to claim the Maryland 4A-3A East region championship.

SEVERNA PARK - The Broadneck High girls lacrosse season came to an end on Wednesday, losing to Severna Park, 9-4. The local rivals squared off for the Maryland 4A-3A East regional final, with the host Falcons claiming the title. A gritty 11-save performance by senior goalie Julia Burns kept the Lady Bruins within striking distance for much of the game, but wasn't enough as the offense went cold and the defense wore down.  "It's hard to come out and not get the result you want, especially when you know you that you can do it," senior Alli Dawson said. Goals from Rachel Mia and Morgan Torggler had Severna Park up 2-0 after just after nine minutes of play. Torggler would pace the Lady Falcons with a game high four goals. "Morgan was …

Two Playoff Games Down for Broadneck's Lady Bruins

Broadneck defeats Annapolis 10-7 yesterday and continue in regional playoffs.

The Broadneck Bruins vs. Annapolis Panthers dueled Saturday afternoon in regional lacrosse playoffs and it was an intense one. The lead was maintained by Broadneck throughout, but Annapolis didn’t go down without a fight. Broadneck's first goal was made by Paige Duncan, assisted by Ali Dawson just six minutes into the game. The second goal was by Logan McCarthy who scored again for the third goal. Ellie McNulty made the fourth goal, assisted by Ali Dawson. Dawson was also the next to score. Coming from a crease roll from behind the net, Dawson faked left, and finished to the right. An amazing 20-yard pass from Aislinn Probst to Zoe Earnest scored the sixth goal. With 1:22 minutes left in the first half, Probst was pulled out due to an …

Bruin Boys Cruise Past Old Mill, 17-2

Senior Mark Brashears powers the Broadneck attack with six goals in the victory.

Mark Brashears wasn't going to lose to Old Mill, not this year. When Broadneck (5-3) faced off against the visiting Patriots on Wednesday, there was no confusion as to who the better team was. The Bruin boys dominated to the tune of a 17-2 victory. "Old Mill beat us last year, so we kind of had a little chip on our shoulder playing against them," Brashears said. "So we decided to just come out here and show them this year we're for real." Brashears netted the games opening three goals, including his second and third tally that finished a mere five seconds apart. "[I] found an opening and just put it in there," said Brashears, modestly describing his third goal. The senior attackman scored a game high six goals, as well assisted another …

Balanced Effort Pushes Bruins Past Annapolis

Broadneck boys lacrosse returns to the win column with a 12-5 victory over Annapolis. The Lady Bruins were also victorious, topping the Panthers 19-12.

After forcing itself into needing a fourth-quarter comeback against Severna Park on Thursday, the Broadneck High boys lacrosse team wanted to make sure it played a complete game against Annapolis. On Tuesday, the Bruins traveled to a damp Al Laramore Field and delivered a 12-5 triumph. "After we lost to Severna Park our guys didn't sulk about it," Broadneck coach Clay White said. The Bruins, who found themselves down 1-0 after one quarter of play, saw seven different players record goals, led by senior Mark Brashears with three.  Thirty-two seconds into the second quarter defender Cameron Rowe tied the game at one and his brother Colin Rowe gave Broadneck the lead only 16 seconds after that. The Bruins would never look back, as Brooks …

Too Little, Too Late for BHS Lacrosse

Both varsity teams fall to rival Severna Park.

Despite late charges, both Broadneck's boys and girls lacrosse teams fell to Severna Park this week. The Broadneck High boys lacrosse team fell to Severna Park, 8-5. Down six to begin the fourth quarter, the Bruins (3-2 in county play) stormed back to cut the lead to three, but could not complete the late comeback against their in-county rivals. "They got the best of us on facing off," Broadneck coach Clay White said. "That was a key, we didn't do well facing off." Severna Park won 11 face-offs compared to six for Broadneck. A potent but very patient Falcon attack worked the Broadneck defenders, passing around until a good shot opened up. Severna Park entered Lawrence E. Knight Stadium not only arch rivals of the Bruins, but with the …
