Wear purple on Friday and visit Caroline's Cakes for a free treat.
Ravens pride in Broadneck has spurred one local business to return to the barter system of yore. Ravens fans can score a free mini-cupcake by flashing their Raven's purple pride by Caroline's Cakes in Annapolis this Friday. Any customer who stops by the store, located in Jemal's Shopping Center, wearing purple on Purple Friday will get a free mini-cupcake, a store representative said. It's not the first time Caroline's Cakes has been flying its Ravens flag. Earlier in the month they featured Ravens-themed cupcakes and cakes. Those specialty cupcakes and more are still on sale for eager fans. Caroline's Cakes is located at 1580 Whitehall Rd, Annapolis, MD 21409.

Caroline Reutter is piecing together the history of a legendary layer cake.
The owner of Caroline's Cakes is overseas chasing down the legend behind the grandfather of all layer cakes. Caroline Reutter said she's been fascinated by Jozsef C. Dobos, the creator of the Dobos torta cake, since she learned her own layer cakes were similar. Reutter has received national acclaim for her seven-layer caramel cake, which has been featured in culinary magazines and the 2011 film The Help. Reutter's search for more information on Dobos led her to piece together disparate parts of a larger story—Dobos' life and the story of the cake itself. In a new documentary tentatively titled A Cakewalk in Budapest, Reutter said she hopes to finally tell that story. "I had to do something with the facts I was uncovering in order for them …

The new shipping functions will be based out of Spartanburg, SC.
One of Broadneck's favorite places to get specialty cakes is moving its national shipping operations to South Carolina. Caroline's Cakes will be opening a new bakery in Spartanburg, SC, this year. The company received approval from the South Carolina Department of Health on Sept. 4, which was the last official hurdle before it could begin operations, a store representative said. The Annapolis bakery, located in Jemal's Shopping Center, will remain in business. For years, in addition to the bakery and deli, Caroline's Cakes had used a wing of the shopping center for its national shipping operations. That's the only thing that's leaving as a result of this move. The store's owner, Caroline Reutter, received national acclaim last year after …

Our 'Broadneck Buzz' columnist visits local teens on the job this summer. This is the first installment of this series.
With a bounty of delicious treats and confections, Caroline’s Cakes has become an extremely popular business in the Broadneck area and across the country. The business has won recognition in the media, including mentions on The Today Show, the Food Network, and Forbes Magazine. A special “Caroline’s Cake” will even be making an appearance this August in the upcoming Dreamworks' film The Help. But with all the fame and prosperity, the staff of Caroline’s Cakes maintains a personal, almost family style air. “Oh, yeah, we get calls from regular customers all the time,” says Annie Lally, upcoming Broadneck High School junior and Caroline’s Cakes employee. “We know a lot of them by name.” The personal feeling at Caroline’s is evident to …
