Girl Scouts Spend Enchanted Evening at Chesapeake Academy

Every girl felt like the belle of the ball at Chesapeake Academy's annual father/daughter dance.

It's true that most fathers think of their daughters as little princesses, but on Friday, the fairytale became a reality at the Chesapeake Academy's father/daughter dance. The tradition began over 10 years ago as a way provide quality time for busy dads to bond with their daughters. Over time, the theme shifted and the dance was titled "Enchanted Evening"  to accommodate different types of families. "Sometimes moms will accompany their daughters if the dad isn't around or can't make it for some reason," said Karen Bennett, fourth grade teacher and manager of the event. "It's such a popular and special event for families that we announce it a year in advance so even the busiest dads make sure they have time off for it." The Enchanted …

Standing O Debuts 'After the Dance'

Local theatre company presents the national premier of a Terrence Rattigan play.

Over the past weekend our region became an unrivaled cultural center when Standing O presented the national premiere of a Terrence Rattigan play.    Standing O had three performances of Rattigan’s "After the Dance" Friday through Sunday at its Black Box Theatre at Chesapeake Academy on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard. Local resident Ron Giddings, who is Standing O’s artistic director, has often stated the company’s mission of introducing lesser-known masterpieces to its audiences.  British playwright Rattigan’s  "After the Dance" was first performed in 1939 and soon-to-be shelved by the author and not seen again for more than 60 years when it had premiers in Great Britain and Canada. When Giddings acquired the rights, he was amazed to learn …

Winter Weather has Arrived, More on its way

Road crews hard at work as snow totals still a question.

The snow total estimates run from a little more than an inch to five or more, but there is no doubt that today and tonight will provide a winter weather scenario that could be dangerous. Chesapeake Academy is opening two hours late and the Harbour School is closing all together. Anne Arundel Community College is opening at noon. The Arnold Senior Activity Center, as well as other senior centers in the county, will be closed today. Road crews are already busy today.
