Readers' Choice: Fishpaws Marketplace for Sandwiches

The beer, wine and deli store tore through the competition to secure its first-place seat.

Broadneck Patch readers chose Fishpaws Marketplace over the competition in the Readers' Choice poll for best sandwich shop this week. Dawn Lawson, the deli manager at the market, thanked her customers for their support. "We have some great customers here," Lawson said. Lawson attributed Fishpaws' success this week to their quality ingredients, which make amazing sandwiches. "We've changed a lot of our products to be made in-house, rather than processed," Lawson said. "Basically it's been about maintaining a higher standard, and choosing the higher-quality products that are available." The San Francisco Sandwich has been the most popular in town, she said. It's on sourdough bread, with house-roasted turkey, bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato …

Summer Beer Recs from Fishpaws

Need a cool treat on these hot days? Here are some suggestions from Fishpaws Marketplace about special summer beers.

Summer is officially here and so are this year’s summer seasonal beers. Fishpaws Marketplace has a large selection of seasonal beers in stock, and provided Broadneck Patch with some suggestions for our readers to consider. Troegs Sunshine Pils - Sunshine Pils combines the crisp taste of European style pilsners with a kicked-up hop character to create a balanced, refreshing seasonal beer with a golden color and fluffy white head. Magic Hat WACKO Summer - Wacko from Magic Hat is a delicious summer beer with a big malty aroma, a subdued hop bite, and a clean, slightly sweet finish. Mama’s Little Yella Pils - This is an uncompromising, small-batch version of the beer that made Pilsen of the Czech Republic famous. Mama’s is built with 100% pale…

It was an all hands on deck event to include Fishpaws deli manager & the event grillmaster, Dawn Lawson, liquor manager, Angela DiCenzo, Anheuser-Busch distributor reps, Danielle Jackson and Stephanie Moir, and Chip, one of the renowned Budweiser Clydesdales. Wine Tasting 101: Learning What You Like and Why

Local liquor stores offer wine tastings, a good place to start.

Next to art galleries, wine retail sections are probably the one place where you most often hear the words, “I don’t know much, but I know what I like….” Yes, it’s a shame that more people don’t cultivate a sense of adventure in the world of wine. Most teeter cautiously in the wine aisles like weak-muscled fawns, wondering at labels and grape varieties, terrified to even whisper the depths of their bewilderment.  Of course lack of education in anything leads to intimidation and prejudice, and all too often forces people into settling for safe bets (or worse) the word of someone who has the telltale snooty edge to their diction. Not too long ago I heard a woman in the wine area of a local liquor store say to a friend, “I’m going to a …

Finding a Niche for Women Winemakers

Wine and author event at Fishpaws Marketplace highlights "Women of the Vine."

Author Deborah Brenner had an epiphany three years ago: she wouldn't just write about women winemakers, she'd carve out a niche for their wines in the male-dominated wine marketplace. Now "Women of the Vine" brand wines, representing six award-winning women winemakers of California, can be found on the shelves in 14 states, including Maryland. The wine label for the white and red varietals mimics the cover of her book by the same name. Brenner debuted both to an appreciative local audience on Friday [Nov. 12] as part of the weekly wine tastings at Fishpaws Marketplace on Ritchie Highway in Arnold. "As a woman entrepreneur, I was excited to promote another woman entrepreneur – and the wines are great," said Kim Lawson, store owner. The …

Celebrate the Sandwich

In celebration of National Sandwich Day, Patch took a taste of what neighborhood delis are slicing.

Back in the 1700's, John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, was deeply engrossed in a poker event that was rumored to have lasted 24 hours. During one game, he got hungry but was not willing to focus all of his attention on having a meal, for fear of losing a fortune. He demanded that his meat be served between two pieces of bread so that he could eat with one hand and still keep the other in the game. In that moment, the sandwich was born. November 3rd was chosen for National Sandwich Day because it is also John Montagu's birthday. Local Broadneck sandwich shops and delis don't need an excuse like a birthday or national holiday to dish out tasty sandwiches -- they take pride in making meals every day for both regular customers and …
