YARRR: New Broadneck Park Playground has Pirate Flair

The old playground will be torn down and replaced with a brand new one this summer.

The new Broadneck Park playground, set to be completed this summer, will be pirate themed. A new design for the playground was on display at the second-annual Broadneck Kite Festival on Sunday. Construction at the playground will begin over the summer, and shouldn't take more than a few weeks to complete, said Friends of Broadneck Park spokesperson Kara McGuirk-Allison. The existing structure will be removed and replaced with the design shown, she said. The Broadneck mom helped create a fundraiser to generate money for the new playground. "I definitely think there will be a lot of pirate-themed birthday parties in our neighborhood from now on," McGuirk-Allison said.

PHOTOS: Kites Fill Skies at Broadneck Park

Dozens of kites filled a cloudless sky on Sunday in Broadneck Park.

Kite-fliers turned out in droves Sunday afternoon for the second annual Broadneck Kite Festival at Broadneck Park. Dozens of kites—of all shapes and sizes—filled the skies at the park, despite some inconsistent gusts that kept heavier kites grounded. That didn't stop some ambitious kite-fliers from sailing their kites more than 1,000 feet in the air in one extreme case. Kites depicting animals and insects were popular, as were kites with themed shapes like Star Wars ships.  The event was hosted at the park by the Friends of Broadneck Park, headed by Kara McGuirk-Allison, a Broadneck mom who successfully led a fundraiser in 2012 to renovate the park's playground.  This year's event wasn't a fundraiser—it was just for fun, McGuirk-Allison …

New Broadneck Playground Design to be Unveiled at Weekend Kite Fest

Sunday's kite festival at Broadneck Park will be highlighted by the unveiling of new plans for the park playground.

More than a year's worth of fundraising at Broadneck Park is about to pay off. An impending renovation of the park's playground will have its design shown off at this Sunday's Broadneck Kite Festival. "We are pleased to reveal the new playground design this Sunday at the Kite Festival/Community Picnic! Recreation and Parks is in charge of the new installation. I will keep you posted as soon as I have a timeline, but I think it should be completed by June, fingers crossed," according to an update on the Facebook page of the Friends of Broadneck Park (FBP). The second-annual Kite Festival will kickoff at the park Sunday at noon. There will be no kites for sale, but FBP organizer Kara McGuirk-Allison said they can be found at several retail …

Celebrate Spring with the 2nd Annual Broadneck Kite Festival

The kite fly and picnic are scheduled for April 21 at Broadneck Park.

On April 21, the sky at Broadneck Park will be filled with kites of all shapes and sizes. The second-annual Broadneck Kite Festival, hosted by the Friends of Broadneck Park, will once again take flight later this month. The free event is open to the public and everyone is invited to attend.  "Pack a picnic, your kite, and bring the family down to Broadneck Park," reads the flyer for the event. "Celebrate your community, meet your neighbors, fly a kite!" Last year's festival was part of a fundraiser for Broadneck Park to generate funds for a renovation to the park's playground. But this year's event is just for fun, said event organizer Kara McGuirk-Allison.  See a photo gallery of the 2012 Broadneck Kite Festival. Local kite-flying …

Second Broadneck Kite Festival Launches in April

Kara McGuirk-Allison recently told Patch that the playground renovation could be completed in May.

Kite pilots, ready your ribbons for the second-annual Broadneck Kite Festival at Broadneck Park. Last year's festival drew a crowd of kite enthusiasts to the park for a fundraiser that benefited the Friends of Broadneck Park, a group that successfully drove a campaign to revitalize the park's playground. This year's festival will kick off on April 21, with a rain date of April 28, according to FBP organizer Kara McGuirk-Allison. In August, former Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold confirmed that the county would fund a $35,000 renovation at the playground, set to begin in spring. McGuirk-Allison recently told Patch that the work could be completed in May. "We should start seeing some action at the playground in April with a …

What Should a New Broadneck Park Playground Look Like?

Members of the community will get to decide the kind of equipment at a renovated playground.

The community has been invited to share their ideas on what should be included at the proposed new playground for Broadneck Park. The community meeting hosted by the Friends of Broadneck Park is planned for 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the Broadneck Library. Earlier this month, the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks gave the green light on a renovation project that will tear down the existing playground at Broadneck park and replace it with all new equipment. Friends of Broadneck Park Director Kara McGuirk-Allison had been fundraising for this purpose over the past year, raising more than $45,000. She started her campaign after seeing playground equipment go unfixed. Part of the criticism of the existing equipment is that it …

Thank you for your commitment to making a better playground for our community!! - Wondering about bathrooms for wee ones who take frequent potty breaks - imagine this is beyond the budget but possibly a future add-on ?? - Also wondering about keeping the appealing trees, pavilion, picnic tables, benches and trail intact Sorry I can not be at the meeting. Wishing you smooth, successful progress!   more ›

Broadneck Park's Playground to be Replaced in Spring

Parents are being asked to give input on what kind of equipment they'd like at the renovated playground.

The county will move forward with plans to replace existing playground equipment at Broadneck Park with newer, safer equipment, following a fundraising movement led by a Broadneck mom. The Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks has announced plans to renovate the park's playground with $35,000 in funds, allocated to Broadneck Park this budget year. The new playground could be open as early as spring 2013. The Friends of Broadneck Park (FBP) also led a fundraising campaign throughout this year for new playground equipment, not only to ensure it was safe, but also to expand the available equipment to younger children. So far they have raised $10,000. Kara McGuirk-Allison, a mother from Broadneck, has headed the effort under …

We are so excited to be moving forward! Just an addition....we will be purchasing equipment for children with different abilities as well, such as a safety swing. The County changes to the playground itself will be the process of making the grounds ADA compliant....this will eat into the $35k they have now, so it is imperative we continue our fundraising efforts. Find out how to buy a …   more ›

PHOTOS: Lemonade Stands A Hit Around Town

A fundraising event for Broadneck Park took form in the shape of lemonade stands this week.

A fundraiser for Broadneck Park this week brought family members to curbs across Broadneck to sell lemonade. The event was organized by The Friends of Broadneck Park, which has been involved in a series of fundraisers this year, all geared toward gathering donations for new equipment at the park's playground. Head of the Friends group, Kara McGuirk-Allison, said this week's fundraiser saw dozens of participants bring out their kids to get involved. How much each family ended up donating to the Friends was up to them, McGuirk-Allison said. To date, the group has helped to raise a few thousand dollars, not including the $35,000 allotment the county's Recreation and Parks Department set aside in this year's budget for renovations to the …
