Carols and Children Abound at Gloria Dei!

Local church’s musical Nativity story shares the glory of the season.

What better way to usher in Christmas week than a real live Christmas Pageant, complete with Mary, Joseph, their donkey, the Innkeeper, kings, shepherds, angels, and, of course, barnyard animals? This past Sunday, the children of Gloria Dei! Lutheran Church provided the community with a memorable musical production about the beauty and wonder of the Nativity. Under the direction of the church's music director, Debbie Greene, and church member and musician Sally Burns, dozens of children, from preschool to the teen years, performed musical numbers and dramatic readings recalling the wonder of the season. Their musical, titled "On Our Way to Bethlehem," followed Mary and Joseph's journey, as well as the journey of all of the participants in …

Broadneck Neighbors Helping Neighbors

My Brother's Pantry lends a hand when it is needed most.

On Saturday, the parking lot of College Parkway Baptist Church was just as full as any other during this busy holiday season. But it wasn't full of shoppers, it was full of givers. These givers were volunteering their time the Saturday morning before Christmas  for a ministry called My Brother's Pantry. This local organization helps families in need by distributing food, one grocery bag at a time. This Saturday, members of Christ Our Anchor Presbyterian Church, organized by Stacie Cochran-McNeal, carried bag after bag full of groceries and loaded them into waiting vehicles. Each bag contained approximately one week's worth of food for a family in need. Each month volunteers from eight Broadneck area churches take turns being responsible …

Peacherine Ragtime Orchestra in Concert

Local residents are invited to travel back in time with a special concert this Sunday.

Peacherine Ragtime Orchestra will take listeners back in time this Sunday afternoon (December 5) at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Arnold. The orchestra will perform a concert featuring musical scores from the early 1900's. The eleven-piece orchestra will be conducted by its founder, Arnold's own Andrew Greene, a 2009 graduate of Broadneck High School who has taken his love of ragtime to college. Upon arriving at the University of Maryland in College Park, where he's currently pursuing an Engineering degree, he sent out emails recruiting musicians who enjoyed ragtime, and now the group finds itself increasingly playing gigs, locally and out of state. A CD is in the works as well. Greene serves as director of the Peacherine Ragtime …

Lending an Extra Hand

Chores and More offer help to those who need it most.

Jim Fons, Patience Amundson and Donna Schell sat around a table in the belly of Saint Margaret's Church Parish Hall this week smiling, laughing and sometimes becoming misty-eyed as they recounted the last 22 years of service for a local ministry called Chores and More. If you asked them, they would tell you that they were the ones who were receiving the bigger blessing, but countless clients would argue otherwise.  Chores and More is an outreach ministry serving persons of any age in the Broadneck community who may be shut-in, elderly or temporarily homebound who need a short-term helping hand. The program is sponsored by local churches, including:  Asbury United Methodist, Broadneck Baptist, Cape St. Claire United Methodist, Christ Our …
