What films are among the best of the year?
As the New Year rapidly approaches, it's a common impulse to look back on what the past year had to offer. It can be hard to sum up a year in anything as the year is ending. Often one can find oneself caught up in the moment, unaware of what the present may look like through the lens of the future. Many times, one votes or bases his/her opinion on their initial reactions and the spirit of judging in the moment. Something happening today may hold a stronger meaning in the future, only developing relevance and importance with time. It is with this knowledge that I hesitantly take a look back on the films of 2010 to compile a list of my 10 favorite films. Many of the films on my list, and ones that didn't make the cut, will gain cultural …
Whether you’re having a party, or just want something to enjoy while you watch the ball drop without the hangover, having a non-alcoholic choice is always a good idea.
Although New Year's Eve is synonymous with sparkling wine and drinks all night, it's always a good idea to provide some alternatives for those not drinking alcohol, even if you're party will be serving. The designated drivers, underage guests and other trying to abstain from drinking won't feel as left out if they've got a drink equally as festive as your other guests in hand. Aside from providing the basics like soda, juices and punch, here are some ideas of creative non-alcoholic drinks to entertain your guests as you bring in 2011. Sparkling cider is an obvious, but perfectly suitable replacement for sparkling wine. Any drink that you'd normally make with sparkling wine, substitute some cider and you're in business. Add a little more …

How to prepare your pine for pick-up after the holidays.
There's nothing like the excitement of decorating and unwrapping presents by the tree. But once Christmas comes and goes, it may be tempting to quickly chunk the tree to the curb with the empty boxes and ripped wrapping paper. But before you do, the county has some guidelines for you to follow when disposing your live tree. Christmas trees will be collected on the regular curbside pick-up day and should be placed outside by 6 a.m. on that day to make sure that it's not missed. "The trees should be free from all ornaments, garland and other decorations," said Tamiko Knight of the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works. This also includes the tree stand and any metal ornament hangers that sometimes get left on the tree. Knight added…

In the quiet Arnold neighborhood of Raintree, down the hill on Waycross Way, drivers hit a certain spot and a vision of twinkling treetops just takes their breath away. It is all thanks to the Kelly family, who hire a crew and over a course of about a week in December, transform their front yard into a holiday light spectacle. From the bottom of the ground to the very tip of the treetops, lights cover every giant limb of their huge front yard trees. The yard and the driveway, as well as the rooftops are also aglow, in a gold/white color, which remind you of the lights of Vegas or Broadway. The Kelly's say they love the holidays, and know that neighbors and local residents appreciate their efforts. from Cape resident Ann-Marie Sedor As one …

The tree was up, the lights were blinking, and the cookies were passed, but nothing put local seniors in the Christmas spirit more than a performance of carols and holiday favorites by Voices in Melody at the Arnold Senior Center last week. The choral group is made up of members of the Anne Arundel County Retired School Personnel Association, ably directed by G. Thomas Neuenschwander. The group meets every Tuesday afternoon at Belvedere Elementary School. They have had a busy holiday schedule, performing at many of the area senior centers, as well as Bay Woods of Annapolis, Atria Manresa Assisted Living, Glen Burnie United Methodist Church, and the Board of Education offices in Annapolis. "We are very happy to be with you today," said …

Kids and adults can follow St. Nick's every move.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is charged with keeping the United States and Canada safe from dangers originating from the sky or space. Tonight, however, the Colorado-based government agency adds one more important task to its daily list of duties. The agency will again provide its Official Santa Tracker (http://www.noradsanta.org/) that marks The Big Man's every move as he makes his way throughout both hemispheres. Included on the site is a countdown and activity page (http://www.noradsanta.org/en/index.html) and a flight tracking system (http://www.noradsanta.org/en/track3d.html) Kids and adults can enjoy this very entertaining site that will have sugar plums dancing through everyone's head before retiring.
Tips for making this holiday a vivid memory for years to come.
This is the season of snapshots. We will all take them; hundreds of them. But what will we do with them once the wrapping paper is cleaned up and the stockings are empty? Scrapbookers across the nation agree that preserving your memories in a scrapbook is far better than storing your prints in a shoe box at the top of the closet, or on your computer's hard drive. Creating beautiful pages that document your family's holiday celebrations is an important step to insuring that your story will be told to future generations. Your children and grandchildren will appreciate your efforts. If you have ever been in the aisles of a scrapbooking store, you have probably felt overwhelmed at all of the choices available to you. Papers, ribbons, buttons…
Broadneck Patch team recalls their favorite stories of 2010.
Last week, the writers, columnists, and staff for Broadneck Patch gathered together to celebrate the holidays, reflect on our work to date, and set goals for ourselves for the coming year. For Mike Smith, our sports writer, the biggest memory for him was being at the big win that the Bruins achieved over Old Mill for the state playoffs. "It was great being caught up in the emotion of the win," said Mike, still getting chills from the amazing come-from-behind victory. For Mommy Made Easy columnist Becca Cleary, it was all about the photos. "Since I am a photographer, I really enjoyed writing the piece about how to take good family photos," she said. "And I loved the opportunity to show the work that I have done." Teen columnist Pablo …

Whether it was the food, the crafts, or a visit from Santa himself, local children had a wonderful afternoon of fun last Saturday at New Hope Chapel's first Cookies with Santa community event. "Many of us commute to the church from other areas. We know we have wonderful neighbors where the church building is located, so we are trying to come up with ways we can open our doors to this community," explained Karlene Hibbard, wife of Church Elder Justin Hibbard. Church member Kristin Bloom helped run the family-friendly Christmas event, organizing the food donations and the activity centers, and, of course, making sure Santa could fit it in his busy schedule. Justin Hibbard said when he first began attending the church, a small building up the…
