Scrap King Gets Year in Jail for Theft

Conti was sentenced to two years, with one year suspended.

The case for Michael Conti, the self-proclaimed Scrap King of Cape St. Claire, came to an end on Thursday in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court. For his charges of theft, Conti was sentenced to two years in prison, with all but one year suspended, to be served in the Anne Arundel County Detention Center, according to Kristin Fleckenstein, spokeswoman for the Anne Arundel County State's Attorney's Office. Following Conti's jail time, he was ordered to be on unsupervised probation for five years. Conti pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary earlier this month, and agreed to provide a restitution check of $2,500 to the owners of stolen goods. Conti's Trial Postponed Until December

Defendant is seeking to replace his attorney before the next trial date.

The trial for Michael Conti, who advertises himself as Cape St. Claire's "Scrap King," was postponed Tuesday so he can secure a new attorney. The Maryland State Attorney's office was prepared to prosecute Conti in the criminal jury trial, set for Tuesday morning, on a series of theft charges. But when brought before the judge, Conti requested to postpone the trial while he seeks a new attorney. Anne Arundel County Circuit Court Judge William C. Mulford told Conti that he needed to provide "a meritorious reason" for swapping attorneys on the day of his trial. Conti replied that he would feel more comfortable with a new attorney. "Your comfort level does not matter to me at all," Mulford said. The judge then ordered Conti to bring in his new…
