Councilman Ladd: Schools Benefiting from Budget Actions

In his latest monthly column, Councilman Dick Ladd writes about how local schools are getting more than 100 new teachers thanks to the passage of the 2013 fiscal year budget.

The following is from the August edition of a column written by Anne Arundel County Councilman Dick Ladd (R-5th District), a resident of the Broadneck peninsula. Ladd submits his columns to Patch each month. It is edited by Patch for style. During July, the council considered and passed a number of budget- and administrative-related bills needed to implement the 2013 budget in addition to considering charter-review proposals. Some of the 2013 budget actions are starting to actualize. The allocation process of the 100 additional teachers reflects very good news for both the Severna Park and Broadneck High School feeder districts. Additional Severna Park teaching positions go to Benfield ES (2nd grade), Folger McKinsey Elementary School (1st…

AACC President Smith Prepares for Retirement

The college's president will retire on Aug. 1.

With 18 years as president of Anne Arundel Community College now behind her, Martha Smith will soon be packing her things and turning over the reigns to a new president. Smith's 18-year tenure as president of AACC ends on Aug. 1, when new president Dawn Lindsay will take over the position. The Capital spoke with Smith, her colleagues, and other local officials about the legacy that she will leave behind. Smith told The Capital that she's unsure what path she'll take after retirement, but is looking into joining area volunteer groups. She said she wants to stay involved, and with a five-year consulting deal with the college, she will still be involved with big-picture activities at AACC. In their farewell message to Smith in June, the …

"We fly combat in our aircraft," he said. "I've logged about 800 hours of combat time." Snyder has lived in Arnold for 12 years, and is married with one son.  Flying is in Snyder's blood. "Probably as far back as I can remember, my father and grandfather were both into planes," he said. "My mom said I used to look up at airplanes when I was just months old. Felony Conviction Could Mean Ouster from County Council

Charter amendments introduced Monday could boot convicted felons.

A councilman convicted of a felony, or found to be unable to perform the duties of office, could be voted out of their County Council seat under a change to the county code introduced Monday. The Council has started adopting changes recommended by the Charter Revision Commission, a group created each decade to identify concerns with rules on how the county government operates. Nine changes to the charter were introduced to the Council Monday, including two that dealt with removing Council members from office. Until now, there has been no official way to deal with that issue. Under the proposed charter revision, the office of a member of the County Council, or the county executive, may be declared vacant with a vote of five members of the …

@ Ronald: It was embarrassing what our county dealt with after Daryl Jones's conviction and subsequent appointment of his successor. Can you imagine if we have no provision to address the problem of our county executive's possible conviction? John Leopold will be tried in a court of law and this has nothing to do with trying to "get him".   more ›

County Transportation Gurus Gather for Solutions

Panelists pitch wild ideas to resolve congestion on Route 50.

Experts in the field of transportation planning put their heads together on Tuesday in Broadneck to find solutions to looming problems. In 2009, when county planners assembled their long-range vision of the county up to year 2035, they left one piece out—transportation. That aspect of the plan has been worked on throughout these past three years, and is set to be finalized soon. A key component of the plan will come from a citizens group established by County Executive John R. Leopold to gather input from around the county on what should be included. The public meeting held Tuesday at St. Margaret’s Parish Hall was organized by the Broadneck Council of Communities (BCC) on the eve of the citizens group’s final meeting, when the public …

Ladd: Council Will Address Bylaws This Month

Councilman Dick Ladd writes a monthly column, which he has submitted to Patch.

The following is from the latest monthly column written and submitted to Patch by County Councilman Dick Ladd (R-5th District), a resident of the Broadneck peninsula. The recognition of Severna Park High School by US News and World Report as one of the top 10 high schools in Maryland and 211th in the country is again recognition of our students, their families and the high school staff’s hard work.  Similarly, Broadneck High School was ranked 16th in Maryland and 300th nationally. We are in their debt and offer our heartfelt gratitude for making Severna Park and the Broadneck Peninsula two of the greatest places to live in the Baltimore-Washington area. The council tempo is picking up as we move into our final two weeks of work on the …
