This week at summer camp it's all about the Olympic games at this gymnastics site in Arnold.
The Olympic games may be far away from the Severna Park and Arnold areas, but the anticipation has brought Olympic-themed activities and play to campers at Severna Park Gymnastics. On Thursday, 32 campers ages 3 to 9 years old played a lively round of balloon volleyball at noon after making Olympic medals in a craft activity earlier in the day. On Wednesday they made torches out of paper and talked about the different flags representing athletes from each country. Hurdles, long jumps and "everything you can think of," related to the Olympics have been incorporated into the two-week program running this week and next, said Courtney Sheetenhelm, manager of Severna Park Gymnastics. Here's a look at the top events from the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and when to tune in.
The 2012 Summer Olympics in London formally get started with opening ceremonies on Friday. Most events will be broadcast live on television or online, and NBCOlympics.com has a fairly helpful TV schedule. London2012.com is also helpful in finding what events are taking place when. (Remember, London is five hours ahead of Maryland, so adjust accordingly.) Two Broadneck stars are competing in this year's summer games—Matthew Centrowitz, a 22-year-old track-and-field star will compete in the 1,500-meter run; and Farrah Hall, a windsurfer will also participate in the Olympic games. They've put in innumerable hours of sweat, blood and tears to get where they are today. They are among the best of the best and are ready to prove their mettle. 529 athletes from 45 states will represent the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. They are competing in events as diverse as athletics, fencing, rowing, soccer and basketball. Matthew Centrowitz will join fellow Broadneck High School alum Farrah Hall in going for the gold.
Those who have watched the athletic career of runner Matthew Centrowitz since his days at Broadneck High School (BHS) will be able to see him compete at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. Centrowitz qualified on Sunday during the 1,500 meter run in the U.S. Olympic track and field trials in Eugene, OR. According to The Baltimore Sun, Centrowitz finished second after taking the lead early in the final lap, but was passed by U.S. Olympic veteran Leonel Manzano. The top three finishers qualified to go to the London Games. The 22-year-old is a 2007 graduate of BHS, a middle-distance running champion and Arnold resident. He went pro at the end of last year and has since been setting records and winning events across the country. Patch …
