Man Gets 6 Years for Attacking Mother with Hammer

Benscoter says he's not sure if he can ever forgive himself, The Capital reported.

An Annapolis man will serve six years in jail for beating his mother with a hammer in March. Robert Benscoter, 34, of the 1300 block of Hazel Nut Court, Annapolis, pleaded guilty in September to the attempted second-degree murder of his 61-year-old mother. In March, police arrested Benscoter for striking his mother, Jo Benscoter, with a hammer repeatedly in the head and torso, according to a police report. When police arrived at the scene, Benscoter fled, leading police on a chase involving K-9 units. He was apprehended more than an hour later in a wooded area near Commanders Way. Robert Nolan Benscoter could face up to 12 years in prison for the attempted second-degree murder of his mother.

A man pleaded guilty in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court on Thursday of attempting to kill his mother with a hammer in their Annapolis home. Robert Benscoter, 33, of the 1300 block of Hazel Nut Court, Annapolis, pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder, according to online court records. In March, police arrested Benscoter for striking his mother, Jo Benscoter, 61, with a hammer repeatedly in the head and torso, according to a police report. Man Gets No Bond in Attempted Murder Case

A trial for Robert Benscoter is scheduled for Aug. 7 in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court.

A man charged with attempting to kill his mother with a hammer in March was denied bond at a Friday court hearing. Robert Nolan Benscoter, 33, of the 1300 block of Hazel Nut Court in Annapolis near Cape St. Claire, was charged with second-degree murder after an incident on March 20 where police say he assaulted his 61-year-old mother with a hammer. The woman survived the assault. Police said that when they arrived, Benscoter had fled the home and led police on an extensive manhunt involving K-9 and air units. He was later found in a wooded area near Commanders Way. Police: Annapolis Man Beat His Mother with Hammer

A Cape St. Claire man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly beating his mother with a hammer, police said. Robert Benscoter, 33, was charged with attempted second-degree murder after he allegedly struck his 61-year-old mother with a hammer in the head and torso after an argument, according to a police release. Anne Arundel County Police responded to the 1300 block of Hazel Nut Court in Cape St. Claire at 8:08 p.m. Tuesday for a report of family violence.  "The victim’s son apparently used a hammer to strike her repeatedly in the head and torso. In fear for her life, the victim fled her home and ran to a nearby neighbor, where she called the police," according to a release.
