A foundation formed after the death of a local teen is giving back to the community.
A nonprofit formed after the death of a Broadneck High School freshman has recently awarded funds to two local schools to help stop bullying. The Olivia Constants Foundation was established in memory of Olivia Constants, who died in June 2011 after a sailing accident on the Severn River. The charity formed in her name is operated by family members and friends, including her sister Chloe Constants. "Our mission is to do everything we can, for whomever we can, in the spirit of Olivia," Chloe Constants said in the foundation's promotional video. In February, the foundation awarded $500 in grants to Severn River Middle School and $360 to Arnold Elementary School to support bullying prevention. A team of eighth-graders from Severn River Middle School took top honors in this year's Black Saga Competition. The statewide academic competition over African-American history was held Saturday at Towson University. Middle schools from across the state sent 48 teams of students to the competition, including two from SRMS in Arnold. The winning team consisted of 8th graders Jasper Frazee, Ethan O'Malley and Phillip Schofield. The same team won the competition back when they were sixth-graders. In the 16 years since the competition was first held, there have been only three perfect scores in the championship round, and the first place Severn Middle School team achieved two of those perfect scores, according to a press release. A Severn River Middle School student's poem, titled Return, was featured in the online magazine called My-Say this month.. My-Say is an online publication written by, and for, for middle school students across Maryland. It offers tweens and teens the opportunity to explore, learn and write about issues that interest them. "The doors creaked closed so here I sit. The land speeds by, and I think over it. Robin Roper, an eighth-grader from Severn River Middle School in Arnold, won the 25th annual Anne Arundel County spelling bee with the word "wafflestomper" on Saturday.
Robin Roper, of Severn River Middle School in Arnold, beat out 31 other top spellers in the Anne Arundel County spelling bee this weekend with her winning word, "wafflestomper." Roper, an eighth-grader, won the 25th annual Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee and earned a trip to the national competition later this year. Her final word, wafflestomper, is a hiking boot with a lug sole. Roper correctly spelled the word in the 39th round of the competition to win her the title. That final round came only after a 27-round duel with defending spelling champion Olivia Simmons, of Bates Middle School, who finished second. Roper and Simmons dueled over the spelling of words such as, langlauf, troika, panglossian, and mynheer, for over an hour before …

Nineteen students from Broadneck-area schools were awarded for strong writing skills. The Anne Arundel County Reading Council recognized 54 students for their talents as storytellers, poets and essayists. The council received more than 1,000 entries. The 22 first- and second-place entries will go on to be judged at the state level. Anne Arundel County will honor the high school writers at a reception on Feb. 21, and the younger writers will be honored in April. Of 24 high school winners, half came from Broadneck High School. The 27th annual Excellence in Education banquet will honor 48 public school teachers and four private school teachers.
Four teachers from Broadneck-area schools are among 48 public school educators to be honored at the 27th annual Excellence in Education banquet in April. The banquet will also honor four private school teachers in the county. At the conclusion of the banquet, the winners for Teacher of the Year will be announced. The following Broadneck-area teachers were nominated by their schools and school communities: Last year's Teacher of the Year was Belvedere Elementary School's fifth-grade teacher Martha Gardner. Severn River Middle's principal June Eyet has retired, and Broadneck High's former principal will replace her for the time being.
Longtime Severn River Middle School principal June Eyet retired at the end of December, having served Anne Arundel County schools for 17 years. Filling her shoes in the interim is Lucinda Hudson, a former SRMS faculty member and former Broadneck High School principal. Hudson also served as interim principal at the start of the school year, while Eyet was on medical leave. In the school's January newsletter, Hudson greeted students and parents, saying she hoped to provide a stable presence at the school. "I hope that my presence here will help sustain the commitment to a high quality educational program that has characterized our school system, and, more specifically, SRMS," Hudson said.

An All-County concert will be held on Feb. 2 featuring 200 of the best student musicians in Anne Arundel County.
After rigorous auditions, almost 200 teens will take the stage in the All-County Middle and High School Band Concert on Feb. 2, according to Anne Arundel County Public Schools. Of the 200 teens chosen to perform, 43 come from Broadneck-area schools including Broadneck High School, Severn River Middle School and Magothy River Middle School. Jenny L. Neff, an award-winning school band director, will lead musicians from 16 of the county's 19 middle schools. Neff, from the Lower Merion School District in Pennsylvania, chose a program that will challenge the middle schoolers and impress the proud parents. John J.
