A crew member aboard a boat in the Severn River suffered a head, neck and back injury, according to a press release from the coast guard.
Coastal emergency agencies were dispatched Saturday to rescue a 64-year-old boater who had been injured while on a sailboat in the mouth of the Severn River, according to a press release from the coast guard. The US Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Maryland Natural Resources Police and Anne Arundel County Fire Department all helped assist in a rescue on the sailboat Joe Joe Bean, which had radioed for help at about noon Saturday. One of its crewmembers had suffered a head, neck and back injury, according to the release. “It was clear the man needed more advanced medical care. At that point, I made the decision to take over with the aid," said Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew Whitlow. Whitlow remained aboard the sailboat, …

Avoiding contact with water from the Severn or Magothy Rivers within 48 hours of a rainfall can help reduce illness due to elevated bacteria levels in the water.
Memorial Day weekend is a week away and its arrival usually signals the beginning of the season when people enjoy swimming and other water-related activities in the Severn and Magothy Rivers. While stormwater runoff and aging septic systems pollute the rivers, people can reduce their risk for illness. Here are some precautions to take before and after coming in contact with the water: The Anne Arundel County Department of Health has a standing advisory that no one should swim in the waters of the beaches in the county, including the Severn and Magothy rivers, within 48 hours after a rainfall. The reason for this policy is that when stormwater flows into the river it carries animal waste from both pets and wild animals, which increases the …

Water lovers enjoyed the holiday weekend and are already enjoying the Broadneck peninsula’s many offerings of the season.
While the Blue Angels did not give us reason to gather on the water this year, Broadneck seafarers still took to the water en mass over Memorial Day weekend. Sailboats, kayaks, skiffs, and dinghies flooded the tributaries of the Severn and Magothy River. Water temperatures are hovering around 75 degrees, and we have seen no signs of sea nettles or jellyfish. (They will surely appear midsummer.) Upon driving through Cape St. Claire on Monday, I noticed many families enjoying the view, the water, and the playgrounds at Cape beach. On the opposite side of the peninsula, the fishing pier at Jonas Green State Park was filled with eager anglers, hoping to reel in a keeper. Up the street, overlooking the Severn, both locals and the influx of …

The PTA at Belvedere Elementary School hosted a fun, family-friendly, healthy alternative to the average school fundraiser.
Everyone emerged a winner on Saturday at Belvedere Elementary School's Fitness for the Future 5k. The 1-mile walk and 5k run were put into action by the PTA as a way to encourage students, teachers, friends and families to participate in a healthy activity while raising money for the school. "This year's proceeds will be put towards technology in the school and enrichment programs for our students," said PTA president and Race Director Dawn Orso. The PTA worked tirelessly to organize the event, recruit sponsors and even held a pre-race pasta dinner to fill up on carbs the night before. Excitement was in the morning air as spectators and participants cheered each other on. Encouragements like, "You can do it!" and, "Come on girls, finish …

Despite the cold, locals sail on for love of the sport.
With a forecast of rain and near freezing temperatures, most of us will spend the weekend huddled by the fire, enjoying a cup of cocoa, watching football. A few of us may alternately venture up to the local mountain resorts for a go at the snow covered slopes. And a still smaller crowd of (possibly deranged) sailing enthusiasts will choose this weekend to inaugurate what is sure to be a fabulous year in sailing. This Sunday is the first week of the annual Annapolis Yacht Club Spring Frostbite Series. Just as bitter as is sounds, this sailing series will entice the most fervent of sailors to shake off the snow and emerge from hibernation to race sailboats each Sunday for a regular sailboat racing series. Sailing in February may seem like a …

Locals join efforts to produce oyster nurseries for the health of local rivers and the Bay.
Broadneck’s original inhabitants understood the importance of the Bay’s oyster population. They named our beloved waterway Chesapeake, which is Algonquin for great shellfish bay and regularly consumed oysters as their shellfish of preference. Oysters were a particularly important part of the native diet in the late winter and early spring while food sources were scarce. Today, we still consume a mammoth quantity of oysters but more as a luxury than as a necessity. Part of the luxury associated with oysters is related to the decline in their population and therefore the strain on the oyster supply. It is often said that there used to be enough oysters lining the bottom of the bay to filter all of its water in a single week and that it would…

County middle school teachers attend national conference in Baltimore.
County students were given an extra day off from school on Friday so that their teachers could attend the National Middle School Association's Annual Conference at the Baltimore Convention Center. Superintendent Kevin Maxwell made the unprecedented decision to close all middle schools in Anne Arundel County to provide teachers "a once in a career" opportunity to attend the national conference held this year in Baltimore. The school system covered the registration fees for the Thursday-Saturday event and provided transportation to Baltimore on Friday for the conference. The conference featured over 500 sessions and numerous exhibits devoted to the unique challenges of reaching students during their middle school years. In addition, middle …
