Three Broadneck Spelling Stars Chosen for Upcoming Competition

The winner of the 25th annual Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee will compete in the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.

Thirty-two area students, including three from schools in the Broadneck community, will show off their spelling skills at the 25th annual Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee on Feb. 23. Eighteen public school students, 13 private school students, and one home-schooled student will vie to become the county champion, according to a news release. The winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, to compete in the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee from May 28-30. 28 Students Set for County Spelling Bee

Five of the competitors are returning school champions, according to school officials.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ best fifth- to eighth-grade spellers are set to compete Feb. 25 for a trip to the national championship in Washington, DC. The 24th annual county spelling bee is set to feature 28 students, including five returning school champions. The competition is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the Board Room at the Parham Building, according to a release from the school system. County Spelling Bee Winner Heads to D.C.

When Emily Durell first heard her championship word Saturday morning in Round 10 of the Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee she “totally freaked out.” The freaking out was for good reason. Her word? Execration. It’s a noun meaning the act of cursing or denouncing. It may sound easy now, especially reading it. But standing in front of a packed room of family members, teachers, administrators and 26 other contestants who had misspelled a word before her, “execration” was not exactly what Emily said she was expecting to hear. “I think it was on the list, but I’ve never used it in a sentence,” the 13-year-old from Crofton Middle School said shortly after correctly spelling the word. “It’s totally mind blowing. I never expected to be the winner.” …
