O’Malley: People Will Die

Gov. Martin O’Malley urged Marylanders to stay inside for the next 36 hours and said the storm will take lives as it moves through Maryland.

Gov. Martin O’Malley said Marylanders will die as Hurricane Sandy moves through the state. “The days ahead are going to be very difficult,” he said in a press conference at Maryland Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Reisterstown Monday morning. “There will be people who will die and are killed in the storm.” He urged residents to stay off the roads and stay inside for the next 24 to 36 hours. High winds are anticipated for the Baltimore-Washington area by the early afternoon, O’Malley said. He expects power outages to start this afternoon and this evening. “There will be many trees that will go down and there will be many power lines that will go down,” he said. The storm has intensified in the past 12 hours, the governor said. “…

Presidential Declaration Devotes Federal Resources to MD

Sen. Ben Cardin announced a presidential declaration that gives Maryland federal aid and Gov. Martin O’Malley urged Maryland citizens to stay off the roads Monday at a press conference at MEMA.

President Barack Obama signed a pre-landfall state of emergency declaration for Maryland. The declaration provides federal resources from FEMA and Health and Human Services to state aid, Sen. Ben Cardin announced at a press conference at Maryland Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Reisterstown Sunday night. “Federal partners are here at your request,” he said. Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services are working alongside state agencies at MEMA’s emergency operations center, which is fully staffed in preparation for Hurricane Sandy. Federal employees from Mississippi, Texas, South Carolina, Indiana and Kansas have come to Maryland’s aid, Cardin said. Military …

O'Malley Gambling Bill Addresses Impact on Maryland Live!

New legislation allowing for expanding gaming in the state would also allow Maryland Live! to get a bigger cut of revenue, and money for local impact grants would be preserved.

Gov. Martin O’Malley on Tuesday said he would introduce a bill that would allow for expanded gambling in the state. The General Assembly will review the bill as part of a special session expected to convene Friday. The bill includes provisions allowing for a new casino in Prince George’s County, but also addresses the impact on the existing casinos in the state, including the Maryland Live! casino at Arundel Mills. Under the legislation, a new casino in Prince George’s County could open by July of 2016, or within 30 months of when the facility in Baltimore City opens. Live table games could also be added to casinos in the state. Voters would ultimately decide on whether to allow for expanded gambling when they head to the polls in November…

O'Malley Rolls Out Gas Tax, Highlights Tough Choices

Republicans say governor's tax proposals will hurt the working families he wants to help.

Gov. Martin O'Malley called for legislators to pass a sales tax on gasoline, saying on Wednesday that the decision would be unpopular but much needed. The governor made his comments in Annapolis during his sixth State of the State speech in which he focused on jobs, taxes and what he called tough choices. "Asking our fellow citizens to do more will not be popular," O'Malley said. "But without anger, fear or meanness, let’s ask one another: how much less education do we think would be good for our children’s future? How much less education do we want? How much less public safety? How many fewer jobs?  There are costs, and there are values." Republicans in the General Assembly criticized O'Malley for policies they said will hurt the same …

O'Malley Briefs Press on Proposed 2013 State Budget

The governor avoided revealing the budget's total, which turns out to be a 3 percent increase from the current spending plan.

Media from around the state just broke from a news conference with Gov. Martin O'Malley during which they were briefed on his proposed 2013 state budget. But one of the most important numbers was missing—exactly how big O'Malley's proposed budget will be. During the event O'Malley talked to the press about spending $4 billion on jobs ($3.6 billion in the capital budget) and shifting $240 million in teacher pension costs to local governments and an increase in the flush tax based on usage. He also put off questions about a possible gas tax, saying he'd answer those questions another day. But how much is the actual budget? He didn't mention it during the nearly two-hour briefing and neither did his staff. It wasn't in his press release. He …

Bay Restoration Fee Increase Proposed to Task Force

The monthly water and sewer fee of $2.50 may double, increasing the average residential fee from $30 per year to $60 per year starting in the 2013 fiscal year.

By Greg Masters Capital News Service ANNAPOLIS—A governor's task force on sustainable growth on Tuesday heard a proposal to double and eventually triple Marylanders' monthly water and sewer fee of $2.50 for Chesapeake Bay restoration. Because of funding shortfalls, the workgroup also recommended extending Maryland's timeframe to meet its bay cleanup goals to 2025, which is the Environmental Protection Agency's deadline, instead of the self-imposed deadline of 2020 that Gov. Martin O'Malley set last year. While Maryland should continue to move at the accelerated pace set by O'Malley, no funding scenario would get the state to its goals by 2020, said John Griffin, secretary of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and chair of the …
