The front of the shirts reads: “Always Remember Tracy #15,” and the back reads, “One County, One Rival, One Heart.”
Broadneck High School lacrosse players wore shirts with the message, “One County, One Rival, One Heart," in the wake of the death of a Severna Park High School student. Broadneck High School’s girls lacrosse team showed up at a Severna Park High School lacrosse game on Thursday wearing T-shirts bearing a message of support for Tracy Vander Kolk, 16, a SPHS student and lacrosse player, who died earlier in May. The idea for the T-shirts came from Broadneck High School (BHS) lacrosse player Blair Bernhardt, who played with Vander Kolk when she was younger. Bernhardt said her idea spread among the team, and within two days, they had the shirts made. BHS lacrosse team captain Anna Haley said Bernhardt’s idea struck a chord with the team, and …

Funding a replacement for Severna Park High School is within the proposed budget, and parents asked that it stay there.
Supporters of a new Severna Park High School (SPHS) dominated the first public hearing for the county's budget for fiscal year 2013, which starts July 1. At one point during Wednesday’s budget hearing in the Anne Arundel County Council’s chambers, a Severna Park mother asked the audience to stand if they were in favor of a new high school. Nearly everyone in the room got out of their chairs and applauded together. “Okay, so just about everyone in the room,” said Councilman Dick Ladd (R-5th District). For many, ensuring county funding for a replacement to SPHS would be the fulfillment of a promise not kept during last year’s budget season. During the final hours of budget deliberations in May 2011, funding for the project was cut out of the…

The team's coach couldn't be there for their weekend victory in the regional championship due to a one-meet ban.
Update (Feb. 24 at 10:25 a.m.)—This article reflects new information about who first reported the infraction to Winans. The Broadneck High School Bruins swimmer who was disqualified from the county meet for shaving beforehand had told the coach of the infraction, but was allowed to compete anyway, a school official told Patch on Thursday. County Athletic Program Supervisor Greg LeGrand said the infraction was reported to Bruins coach Colleen Winans before the meet began, but she chose to let her swim. Winans said she first heard about the incident from the coach of another team, who heard it from a student who saw the female swimmer shaving. “The student should have been disqualified to begin with,” LeGrand said. “We expect our coaches to…

It's ridiculous that LeGrand and Kasmarak allowed this student to precipitate and wouldn't even attempt to make an appeal for Collin Harrell. The swimmer knew what she did was wrong and so did the coach. Yet, a kid that sticks up for his mother, they will not support. Unreal that they didn't contact the North County administration and didn't give this kid a chance. I guess if you get hurt in the …   more ›
Severna Park High School has been named the new champion nearly two weeks later.
UPDATE (6:25 p.m.)—An illegal shaving the day of the meet has cost Broadneck High School’s girls varsity swim team its county championship, according to a schools spokesman. Severna Park High School's girls varsity swim team has been named the new champion of the Feb. 10 event after points were redistributed, with Broadneck placing third. A Bruins swimmer was disqualified after officials learned that she had shaved "on site" just before the competition began, in violation of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) rulebook, a release from the school system said. “No team personnel/competitor shall perform any on-site shaving before, during or after the meet," according to the rulebook. According to the NFHS rule …

Rival teams Broadneck and Severna Park take to the court for charity.
In some ways, the excitement of the rivalry games between Broadneck and Severna Park was the same. Hard fought plays, cheering and jeering fans, friends on both sides greeting each other during half time. But the four basketball games between the BHS and SPHS junior and senior varsity boys and girls teams didn’t separate the communities as much as it brought them together yesterday, and all for a good cause. The Hoops for the Cure rivalry games event was a fundraiser for the Annapolis Wellness House, a nonprofit organization that supports families who are affected by cancer. The kickoff began with Broadneck Girls Varsity Coach Erin Thorne traveling to Severna Park High to officially deliver the challenge. Over the past couple of weeks, …
