The governor asked students how they balanced their work, education and family time, and if tuition was becoming a problem.
Gov. Martin O'Malley surrounded himself with some of the brightest minds at Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) to gather thoughts on where higher education should be headed. As he moves into the next legislative session, O'Malley said there are shifting sands in today's marketplace that students need to be prepared for and he wanted ideas on the challenges students are facing. "We've got to find more flexible and cost-effective ways to get people's skillset levels up to the current job demands," O'Malley said. "I'm on a mission to figure this out in Maryland, and to do it ahead of other states." He asked students how they balanced their work, education and family time, and if tuition was becoming a problem. Darius Butler, 25, of …
Conti was sentenced to two years, with one year suspended.
The case for Michael Conti, the self-proclaimed Scrap King of Cape St. Claire, came to an end on Thursday in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court. For his charges of theft, Conti was sentenced to two years in prison, with all but one year suspended, to be served in the Anne Arundel County Detention Center, according to Kristin Fleckenstein, spokeswoman for the Anne Arundel County State's Attorney's Office. Following Conti's jail time, he was ordered to be on unsupervised probation for five years. Conti pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary earlier this month, and agreed to provide a restitution check of $2,500 to the owners of stolen goods. Conti was arrested in June for burglarizing a home in Cape St. Claire that was undergoing renovation…

The new school will offer preschool through 12th grade classes to nearly 800 students, becoming the largest independent school in Anne Arundel County.
The Severn School in Severna Park and the Chesapeake Academy in Arnold have signed an agreement to merge into one school over the summer, according to a release. The Severn School's Board of Trustees made the announcement Wednesday, saying the school will be able to retain its name, and extend its grade offerings from preschool through 12th grade. The Chesapeake Academy will be renamed to the Severn School Chesapeake Campus. “We’ve long enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with Chesapeake Academy, welcoming students into our Middle School and sharing a reciprocal faculty tuition remission,” said Severn School Headmaster Doug Lagarde. “While the idea of joining forces with Chesapeake Academy is not new, the timing now is ideal.” The …
For every $1 spent, customers receive one point. Every 100 points can be redeemed for 10 cents off per gallon at the pump.
It's time to put all those trips to Safeway to use at the pump. The Arnold location of the supermarket chain launched a gas rewards program for Exxon/Mobil gas stations on Wednesday. Customers will now accumulate points with each purchase, and can use them for gas discounts, between 10 cents to $1 off each gallon. For every $1 spent, customers receive one point. Every 100 points can be redeemed for 10 cents off per gallon at the pump. The discount program is similar to the one Giant supermarket uses with Shell gas stations, but it is the first rewards program of its kind for Arnold residents. Purchases made within 24 hours won't be reflected in your points. Customers can visit the Exxon across from Safeway on Church Road in Arnold, or the …

Property owners raised rent by 80 percent, owner says.
The owner of a longtime Arnold business chose to move out of town rather than pay a skyrocketing rent, he said. The Depot Wine & Spirits owner Mike Mangum has been packing the remains of the store's wares since it closed its doors earlier this month. He plans to reopen the store in Annapolis, where he said rent is actually cheaper than Arnold Station shopping center. The new proposed location of The Depot will be in the Gateway Village shopping center, which also houses Safeway and Best Buy, near Defense Highway. Mangum said the property manager of Arnold Station, Continential Realty, recently raised its rent rates by more than 80 percent. For Mangum, that made the prospect of operating in Arnold infeasible. "It's astronomical. You …
