On the blog post Effects of Increasing the Gas Tax
Carol B
7:20 am on Thursday, March 21, 2013
ReplyI would like to know where O'Malley thinks taxpayers who are already staggering under increases in everything but their salaries--many of whom are now also facing a 20% decrease in their income as a result of sequestration--are going to find the money to fund his grandiose fantasies? I'll agree to an increase in the tax on gasoline when he and his cronies agree to stop driving state-provided vehicles, and use personally-owned vehicles run on personally paid-for gasoline that comes out of their handsome salaries, just like the rest of us--and agree give up all of the other unsupportable perquisites of their exalted offices, including lavish parties and entertainment and so on--just as the rest of us have had to do. As soon as he came into office, the name of the state should've been changed from "Maryland" to TAXUS.

On the article Bricks! Flats170 Apartments Shaping Up

ReplyI really don't understand why homeowners in the area should rejoice. From what I've been told, all this construction has further depressed the market for existing homes, though the number of sales (short and otherwise) has increased. And Andrea's right: there's nothing appealing about a flat brick facade; it's like every other building made of bricks. Maybe the complex will be more attractive when it's finished. (I do hope they will put in some trees and shrubbery to soften the appearance.)

ReplyCan you let us know what date(s) and time(s), please? I live in Odenton, and work in Arlington, VA; I would definitely have to take a half-day off to participate, but depending on the timing it might not be possible at all.

ReplyHow about creating a municipal doggy park somewhere in the vicinity of Seven Oaks? There are many dog-owners here who would love to exercise their animals off-leash in a safe, fenced-in place--but nowhere where we can do that.

On the article Arundel Middle Teacher Placed on Leave Following 'Disturbing' Video

ReplyThe negative comments about Ms. Blue's behavior are not "racist"--except, perhaps, for the ones that Tim Lemke deleted, which I didn't see. The behavior of these two grown women is unacceptable--each for its own set of reasons--and yes, even with adult students, the prevalence of disrespect is shocking to someone who grew up when your parents automatically took the side of your teachers, if ever you got into trouble in school. Our teachers were on pedestals, and when they were really good, we aspired to be like them. Now they're just service personnel (or worse, free child-care attendants) who are expected to educate their students about manners and ethics and decency and respect and a whole host of things that are not directly related to "readin', writin', and 'rithmetic." But that is still no excuse for the behavior of this teacher, or her colleague. If you can't manage your anger--if you can't follow the accepted protocols (such as sending the child to the principal's office, or telling her you will defer your comments until you meet with her parents, and so on), and you don't know how to defuse such a situation without going banshee in front of the rest of the class, and engaging in a ridiculous tirade that robs them of the opportunity to learn---and if you are so "pissed" that you forget how to speak your native tongue, then you don't belong teaching middle school--no matter what race you are.

On the article POLL: Did Leopold Do the Right Thing by Resigning?
Carol B
8:41 am on Sunday, February 3, 2013
ReplyLeopold's resignation was far less likely motivated by humility than by fear of humiliation: he simply wanted to avoid facing the public consequences of the flagrant breach of his fiduciary duties to this county and its people. He should have resigned when the scandal first broke.

ReplyNO SEVERANCE. NO RETIREMENT. PAY BACK THE EQUIVALENT OF THE COUNTY SALARIES HE EXPENDED FOR PERSONAL USE. "I'm humbled" doesn't cut it. Every arrogant self-serving politician (of whatever stripe) needs to be put on notice that we aren't going to fund their "play dates" or their mistresses or their abuse of the power that comes with their positions anymore.

On the article Attorney Urges County Council to Postpone Removal of Executive
Carol B
7:29 am on Thursday, January 31, 2013
ReplyThen Hogsdon needs to be removed, too. The legislative paperwork for Leopold's ouster needs to be completed so that it is ready and waiting for signature the minute sentence is passed--and yes, he should be suspended without pay until his removal is final. He elected to waive trial by jury; the judge in this case knew before it was announced what his verdict would be, and exactly what penalties he means to impose for the charges on which he found this sorry excuse for a county executive guilty, so sentencing is simply a pro forma gesture. The sooner Leopold and his malicious influence are out of office, the sooner all of the people he has harmed can return to their duties without fear of retaliation.

ReplyHe needs not only to leavc the office in disgrace, without pension or severance--but to be forced to reimburse the citizens of Anne Arundel County for every hour of civil service time that he abused (his own, as well as that of his staffers and the police detail assigned to protect him), and be penalized for jeopardizing the lives and safety of county residents by having police officers act as personal lookouts during his tawdry parking lot trysts, instead of keeping decent people from harm.
(One does have to wonder how a 69 year old man sporting a catheter after two back surgeries manages to engage in back-seat calisthenics in the first place, though.)
The judge was overly lenient in his verdict. Let's hope he's not so liberal in his sentencing.

What happened to the humongous increase in the values of existing homes that we were supposed to see because of BRAC? My (now 14 year old) property is now $50K or more under water, in Seven Oaks: how am I supposed to compete with all the brand new stuff, at "the gateway" and around Arundel Mills??? My poor neighbors--two young kids--bought a "fixer upper," and have been sinking money into it as though we lived in Bethesda. They'll never recover their investment here--the city council will see to that. I've wanted to move almost since I got here, in 2005. The fact of the matter is--I can't.
