ReplyAs a military wife, I use facebook and twitter to keep up with friends and family as we move all over the country. I have almost 1,000 friends on my personal page. This month I just started a business facebook page for my photography business limelight 31 photography. I have a little over 100 followers and am using the site to announce promotions and model calls for themed shoots.
For me facebook is a lifeline. The past four years have been filled with much injury and heartache for my family. My facebook friends posted encouraging thoughts on my wall and sent messages filled with hope. They rejoiced with me when things turned around for us.
I also use facebook to alert friends wheb I have a new blog post. I have a wide readership and using networkedblogs on facebook allows me to instantly let them know when I have published a new blog post.
You can find my facebook page under Rebecca Cleary, my business page under limelight 31 photography and my blog at beccasfreshfruit.blogspot.com. -

ReplyThank you ladies! This story was definitely a labor of love. From the moment I met Brian and Rachael, I started writing their story in my head and have been able to think of little else since. They are an inspiring couple who I am so thankful to have met. I am so thrilled that their story is being well recieved. Stories like theirs are repeated over and over again in the lives of so many young men and women who are willing to sacrifice all for freedom. God Bless America!

ReplyI was really impressed with him when I heard him interviewed. I think his decision to not wrestle a girl is admirable. His main point was that the holds and body slams were just not appropriate for him to be performing on a girl or her on him. He stood behind his beliefs and that is certainly his right. To wrestle her would be compromising his standards and I don't think anyone should be forced to do that. I would be very proud of my sons if they made the same decision.

ReplyI am a huge advocate for breastfeeding. I breast fed all of my four children. The last one I breastfed for 2 years and 3 months. That may seem like a really long time but I was in Southern California and during those years it was "the thing to do" and widely accepted to breast feed all the way up to three years old. Anyway, having said that, I also thing it is ridiculous to get a tax break on the pumps. I don't think this will make women want to breast feed if that was the goal. If you are a woman and you do not want to breast feed I hardly think that a $350 tax credit is going to convince you to endure what can sometimes be a very hard thing if you are not dedicated to it.
I do agree with all of the health benefits and would love for all women to choose to breast feed their babies, but I do not want the government to influence me or anyone else into making any personal life decisions. I can tell you that next year if the IRS gives a tax break on buying eggplant because it is healthy, I'm still not eating it! -

ReplyI agree whole-heartedly Cheryl. Harsh parenting would never work for me anyway because I am not a harsh person. I don't enjoy bending others to my will even for the sake of making them "the best". I would worry too much about their emotional developement and the built up resentment that would surely surface at some point.
We all know parents who are too lenient. They let little bobby or sally run all over them and it shows in the lack of respect that the children have. I don't know too many parents who are even remotely as harsh as Amy is. I think most of us find ourselves in the middle somewhere.
So, what now? Do we just stay in the middle of the road even though our western counterparts are raising kids who leave ours in the dust academically and many times in the arts as well.
I don't really want to raise "super" kids. By that I mean that I do not push them to be better than everyone else. I just push them to be the best them that they can be. As I already admitted though, I am not always rising to this challenge consistently day in and day out.
I do think that American society has taken away or at least watered down the competitive nature of our kids. For example, when our kid's sports teams don't keep score and give the same trophies to the losers as they do the winners, then why would kids want to get out there and sweat? Hard work should be rewarded. In my opinion our "everyone is a winner" attitude has contributed to this generation of entitlement. -

ReplyHi Jan! Like you I began reading the Time Magazine on the bashing bandwagon, but by the time I was mid-way through I also found myself identifying with her parenting goals. We have hosted Japanese and Chinese exchange students and I am in awe of their maturity, intelligence, respect and work ethic even at 15 or 16! You are right, balance is definitely the key and no I don't think it is too late to change middle schoolers. I have three teenagers age 14, 17 and 19 and I will admit, we've coddled them alot. They have no idea what true hard work is. They have a few chores which they half do and then re-do when we get on to them and they tend to do the minimum in school. Like you we have also implemented a grade rule. Parent connect is an awesome tool, isn't it? If I can attempt and sometimes be successful at changing my teens, then you can surely change your middle schoolers.
We also have a 7 year old (our do-over baby!) and I'm trying to start earlier with her. Perhaps it was because my other three were so close in age and my Navy husband was deployed alot when they were young, but I just didn't require as much of them in elementary school as I do from her.
So, Jan, you and I are on the same page. We could definitely do better with our kids because they are more capable than we give them credit for.
By the way, thanks so much for joining in the discussion!
